This was the first ranked contender (Ring or TBRB) that Golovkin dispatched, I think? Certainly he was billed as the best fighter that Golovkin had fought and it was his HBO debut. Some performance.

Proksa was a riffing, gunslinger of a fighter, low hands, fast reflexes, living on the edge, a southpaw, a bit of a nightmare to be honest, for an unseasoned fighter. You can see Golovkin charge him from the off, round him with that shepherding footwork and when Proksa gets a little fruity, he hurts him, bad, to bag the first round beyond doubt.

All down hill from the Pole, who was ranked number four in the world, from there.

Golovkin has dusted nine ranked contenders man. Nine. That's a lot for real.

Anyway, this short and sweet bout is well worth some of your lockdown time if you've not seen it; and the video has all the before and after, which I really like.

Did we even have TBRB at the time? I thought it was founded in 2013.

I remember I actually slightly favored Proksa to be the next big thing at middle over Golovkin (Super G > Triple G ;)) after the way Proksa completely destroyed Sylvester. Man... was I wrong about that!
Then we got the Hope fight, and although I'm still saying Proksa beat him that first time around despite the huge cut, I saw he didn't respond well to adversity at all.

First contender ranked by either Ring or TBRB.

It was founded late in 2012 though.

I recall Proksa coming in as an underdog and dismantling Kerry Hope in his backyard.

Proksa won the rematch easily, and came in there as the favorite as far as I recall. The only reason he "lost" the first ome was due to the nasty cut that bothered him for most of the 1st fight.
There was never any question if he was better as Hope.
Hope got lucky with the headclash and the home advantage in the first meeting.

Proksa fought a little like Sergio w/ his herky jerky movement and the way he dipped and fired his left.

No offense to Proksa, but even at the time I couldn't get over that it was supposed to be Pirog in there vs GGG instead. Talk about a cursed fighter...

A fantastic win and his US debut I believe? I think before this I had only seen GGG against lajuan simon (inside a hotel lobby it looked like) and i think kasim ouma, oh yeah and the japanese fugachimi guy with the long board shorts.

This fight was the first time I ever saw Golovkin fight, and I heard very little of him before this. I think i saw his name in the lower end of the Rings top 10 at the time, that was about it. HBO did a great job of educating me on him, then he backed it up. Boy did he back it up. Been a big fan ever since. He is a great champ and a breath of fresh air to boxing. Humble and great at the same time, much like Manny Pacquiao and unlike the arrogant Floyd Mayweather.

Yep! too many youngsters seem to think acting like a jackass is how you attract fans.

BTW, the canelo fanboys love to say 3G is the biggest diva in boxing... yes, that's coming from the canelo fanatics!

I remain unashamed of spearheading the Super G bandwagon here. Anybody wants to say boo about it, step up; you'll get licked and stay licked. :rosstheboss

Like, yes, he turned out to be lacking when he stepped up to elite level - but so what? Too many of you gormless mealy-mouthed poltroons seem mortified at the idea of 'getting it wrong' (that is, lavishing compliments on any given prospect who may fall short of, say, ATG consensus status :sisi1) but that sort of "look what I knew!" puffery is a child's game and shouldn't be your main thrust in enjoying the sport - as gambling (alone) shouldn't.

No, this was a beautiful story that deserved to be told. A young Pole with a feisty pugnacious spirit and more than a speck of talent, but with no local guidance to realize his dreams, watching & idolizing American boxers on belly & forearms in his bunk, syncretizing his own style first in his mind and then in the gym. That's really good shit. And he did alright by it, until GGG raped him.

I liked Proksa. He gets a raw deal these days but so do pretty much any of the middleweights who had the gumption to try to stop the Golovkin hype train when it was really motoring.

I got on the GGG bandwagon when he first came into the U.S. boxing scene.

I slowly started getting off the bandwagon , and after he refused to fight Ward, I just leaped off.
