Genarro gave ODLH some good work even if that Genarro's only fight @ 135. Floyd took him at his best weight (130). I don't see a reason to devalue either victory. Both were in their early 20s beating a guy who held and defended a title for years on end. A guy who was pretty big for his class. Good for them. Good for Gennaro getting that money.
So bloody what, they were champions and dominant champions when Floyd beat them. It is only after he beats them excuses get made blah blah. After every defeat there is an injury or excuse but the truth is Floyd fought a murderers row of opponents and beat them all which is why he is TBE. He may not be the greatest ever or best ever pound for pound which rightly go to Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson/ Charley Burleybut he is TBE which means the best ever and the best of his era.
It was a really good win to do it in that fashion. Hernandez was a "hall of very good" type at his best. The Nelson fight a yea and a half prior showed both Chicanito's heart (he didn't have to get up after a late shot by the Professor, but he did just that to finish the fight instead of taking the DQ) and his limitations against the top level. The Professor was on his last legs, being 38 at the time and fighting more or less to the level of Jesse James Leija in the last stages of his illustrious career. Needing a split decision to beat an old Nelson, good as he was, in your hometown, when people boo the decision, isn't the type of result you'd expect out of a "great" one. That this hasn't been brought up by either side yet makes me wonder if anyone actually gave a damn to watch the fights and evaluate Hernandez for what he was rather than just look at Boxrec and either blindly bash or nuthug the victory. Is it overrated? Depends on how you rate it, I guess. I give Floyd a good amount of credit for the win and performance at that age, all things considered, but I've seen some blow it up in to more than it was. I really wanted to see Floyd clean out the rest of 130 before he moved up. Freitas and Casamayor were there and I'd have liked to see those fights come off (particularly Casamayor) before moving up.
They say Floyd was the best of an era. I'm interested in what era that was because Genero Hernandez won a title when Canelo was one year old.
Morales legs were gone, he was coming from a embarrassing defeat at the hands of Raheem, he looked shot and was not the same Morales, Hatton was coming in from getting ktfo by Mayweather and Collazo almost ripped his head off, Mosley was old and was coming from almost a shutout from Mayweather, Margarito was weight drained and didn't had his secret weapon, DLH was shot and weight drained aswell, Cotto was just coming back from a brutal assault from Margarito.
Dude.... STFU and stop bringing 3G in to every thread! You're as obsessed w/ 3G as Isal is!! You both can't HELP but to talk about him every day....
Why the **** you worried about it? Once again you attack me instead of the dumbass thread starter who's trashing a good win.
Mayweather only ever fought top boxers when they were past their prime. Mosley was 40 Pacquiao was avoided until he was KOed by JMM De La Hoya was past his best Hernandez was faded Barrera was smaller and faded Cotto was faded, had been stopped by Margarito and Pacquiao Why didn't he fight De La Hoya around the time he fought Hernandez? He made other boxers (JMM, Hatton, etc) move up a division or two, but always fought only at the weight he was most comfortable at. Why did he avoid Paul Williams in 2007-2009? Why did he have no interest in fighting Pacquiao in 2010-2012? Why did he avoid Tszyu? (he skipped 140 and went to 147 to fight a faded journeyman).
You do realize that going into the fight Genero was unbeaten at 130 for his career, again like you said his only loss was 3 yrs prior in his only fight at 135 vs a future all time great in Hoya. y’all need to give it a rest if anything this win is better than given credit for much like most of Mayweather’s resume.
Genaro his most underrated victory. Undefeated at 130, one of the top 10 or about there fighters in the divisions' history. Everybody sees what they want to see but watch the first few rounds of their fight you can see that Genaro is still very much some level of a good fighter, executing a plan. His form wasn't prime, sure, but he was still elite without question.
So by that token, does Floyd get extra credit gold star bonus points for his win against Cotto since he had a suspended jail sentence to begin serving less than a month after?
It was a good win. He's a solid B+ level fighter. And no he was 32. You guys are making it seem like he was 37 and totally done.
