Who is the ultimate heavyweight nearly man? The one that came so close to being champ but it wasn’t to be.

yes there’s probably more from 60/70 years ago, and some Morden I’ve missed, but that’s the list so pick your poison

Of 'recent' times Golota is the first name to spring to mind.

I picked Norton. If he wasn't facing the most popular athlete ever he would've been champion. He had razor close decisions go against him against some peoples no1 an 2 ever in Ali and Holmes

You shoul replace Norton with Young. Norton held the title briefly in 1978.

    From Wikipedia:

Although Norton was expected to face Ali for a fourth time, to fight for the WBC heavyweight championship, plans changed due to Ali's loss of his title to Leon Spinks on February 15, 1978. The WBC then ordered a match between the new champion and Norton, its number one contender. Spinks however, chose to face Ali in his first title defence, instead of facing Norton.[24][25] The WBC responded on March 18, 1978, by retroactively giving title fight status to Norton's victory over Young the year before and awarded Norton their championship, which split the heavyweight championship for the first time since Jimmy Ellis and Joe Frazier were both recognized as champions in the early 1970s.[4][26]

It don't feel right does it, handed a title..I think that's why most don't think Norton held it, it meant nothing in some ways not having it stamped by having a fight for it !
