Had Hearns boxed and say beaten Marvin, would that have been as good for boxing as what happened? What happened was probably the best thing for both of those guys. They are linked with a time in a special way.. Had Tommy won people would have said Marvin was overrated or things like that, and the fight would not be remembered as much.
Of course Hearns is a boxer, with his height and reach a masterful one at that. However, imo there was nothing Hearns could have done to fend off Hagler on that night. The way Hagler came out at Hearns to start the fight there was little Hearns could have done to stop him except fight back and try to catch Hagler coming in with his right hand. For parts of the rounds Hearns did try to box and move, but Hagler was just getting inside Hearns reach and working his body, then hammering it up upstairs. Hagler's trainers later explained that they didn't like Hagler's chances over the long haul of a fight. Outboxing Hearns was going to be to big a task so they devised a plan for Hagler to go at Hearns full tilt from the very start. The Petronelli's went on to state, "had Hearns still been standing after 6 rounds, Hagler's tank would have been on empty." Hagler trained to fight full tilt for 6 rounds. That's what I loved about Marvin Hagler, while most would have been leary of Hearns punching power and tried to avoid it, he didn't give a **** one way or the other. The fight plan was devised as to the best way to come out of there victorious and victorious he was. What a night for Marvin Hagler and for boxing! SENSATIONAL!!!!
Hearns outboxed Sugar Ray Leonard. He started as a kid without power, Manny honed his right hand, and he kept getting titles when his hand was shot. To call him a fighter is very reductionist. He didn't have the chin to just be a slugger. Was all about setting it up with the jab.
An exciting scrap, but I have absolutely no idea how some claim that it is the greatest bout ever. Ludicrous.
Thanks for the explanation, but the real reason was Hagler got a bad cut on his face early in that fight. That's why he could not let the fight go the distance. You just missed this point.
Hearns broke his hand in round 1 impacting wrong against Haglers head. Many say without that accident he would have beaten Hagler. But they dont consider Hagler had one of the toughest skulls and chins ever and this is part of Boxing. However it was a real war...never seen two fighters exchange each other so many blows in few rounds.
