Haha but wwe is a show it is s bull**** mate. I talk about real wrestling and grappling the part of the ground game of the mma
I'd personally take 1930s over 1940s clearly, but I don't like comparing whole eras - it's pointless to me.
This, he had a good jab and was decent at keeping the distance, from what I've seen his footwork looks pretty good for a guy with a medical condition who started really late. He was the 30ies version of Valuev, without the chin, but more mobile and fluid. I don't think he really loved fighting, if he wanted he could have bullied and mauled guys on the inside, back then you could still get away with a lot more grappling.
I wonder if oncen & for all someone could establish how many of his fights were fixed. While I do not think he was involved, he was exploited, in some ways a tragic figure. The amazing thing is though he was champion before either modern strength training, Joe Weider got started, or even before steroids were *invented*... He was stronger with more muscle than pretty much any modern boxer. 6.5" & he was not even overweight at 284 vs. Young Stribling?! He had acromeglia, massive bones & tremendous strength. Perhaps if he was taught to use it-& like so many today the referees allowed too much holding... He could have been a legitimate ATG.
Except he couldn't take a heavy shot without going down, didn't punch his weight, and went to pieces under fire. He was overweight against Stribling ,but perhaps they figured, why train when the result is already decided?
He did quite well for someone who can't take a heavy shot against Louis. I don't understand the Carnera hate. He was fairly limited but good fighter who wasn't the most talented boxer but trained hard to gain skills. He actually looks better than a lot of overweight fighters from later eras who people praise.
He lasted more rounds than a lot of good fighters. Why? Is it because he wasn't as chinny as you call him, or because he wasn't as poor boxer as you describe him?
