If There Had Being No Holyfield?

Bowe is completely forgotten.

 

A lot depends upon the decisions that Douglas makes.

He had a rematch clause in his contract for the Tyson fight, but he regained upon it, for another big money pay day with Holyfield.

So with no Holyfield, we might have a scenario where Tyson regains the title, and takes it to prison with him, or he might be tempted into a match with another contender such as Ruddock.

In the latter scenario, the title likely ends up getting passed around a bit.

When Tyson comes out of prison, a showdown between him and Bowe becomes much more likely, because it is the only big fight that can be made.

Whatever happens, the long shadow of Lewis is starting to loom over the division, and he possibly takes over a bit earlier with Holyfield out of the way.

 

It probably wouldn’t be considered a golden era. He was the connecting point for a lot of those fighters and fights. He got in there with them all.

 

It would have almost definitely been a Douglas rematch with Tyson which I would have favoured Tyson to extract his revenge over a Douglas who would probably have struggled to match his inspiring and highly motivated mental and physical condition of the first fight. A defence against the then highly regarded Razor Rudduck who was originally scheduled to challenge Tyson before the Douglas defence, in Nov 1989 before being postponed because of an injury to Tyson, would probably be next which I assume Tyson would win. That would have taken us to around mid to late 1991 which would have been too early for Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bose to challenge Tyson so assuming a matchup with George Foreman couldn't be made for whatever reasons, it would be a routine defence against the likes of Bert Cooper or Tim Witherspoon. Then come 1992, the build up would probably be focused on the threats posed by the young guns, Bowe and Lewis and what great potential fights they could have been.

This is all assuming that events outside the ring don't mirror what really happened in reality and Tyson is arrested and sent to jail in 1992.

Bowe has nothing without his competitive serie against holyfield

 

The key question seems to have been whether Douglas would have rematched Tyson.

Some people close to Douglas say that he reneged on the rematch clause, to punish Don King fro trying to cheat him out of the title.

If this is the case, Douglas may well have still done the same.

Having said that, if there had been no Holyfield around, then he probably has no big money option apart from a Tyson rematch.

This consideration might have pushed him to swallow his pride, and honor the rematch clause.

 

Not necessarily.

Douglas rematches Tyson, loses via stoppage and will never been seen again. Instead of Holy, Bowe is gonna meet MT in a huge "Friendly Fire" promotion and stopps Tyson in round 10, before someone´s going to jail.
With no Holy out there, he´d prob. face Lewis before going off the rails. And early Lewis imho was winnable for him. Btw, in a scenario likes this, someone else eventually had to keep Razor Ruddock and George Foreman busy.

 

Douglas beats Tyson in a rematch to inaugurate his 10 year reign.

 

Holyfield was the Duran of that fab 4.
