Which fighters, who made upwards of say $10 mill from their careers, kept most of it after they retired? Foreman, Mayweather, Oscar don't count!
I think throughout history there were very few, I think another fighter who held onto his earnings was Archie Moore, in my hometown he had athletic centers for the youth built. He was a very intelligent man. Archie even paid for an impoverished youth to have eye surgery, his parents could not afford the procedure, everything was paid for.
It would have been interesting to see Marvelous Marvin Hagler in a movie with Carlos Monzon as they were both actors, and made movies. Just a thought, both retired to the silver screen.
Good call. Holmes may have had his (qualified) issues as a champion - ducking/picking opponents - but he was smart enough to heed whatever savvy financial advice he was given. I recall seeing an interview where they showed him building his dream home in Easton PA; he also bought real estate in the local community, essentially giving back to his hometown while earning dividends. He made no qualms about fighting for the paychecks, but he never apparently squandered any of it - as far as I know, he never had any scandals that affected his net worth.
Going back a while, but accounting for inflation his earnings would be pretty hefty in this day and age - Jimmy McLarnin. A real attraction during his career, but a very smart man who was retired before he was thirty and had a proper manager in Pop Foster. Made plenty of money, invested it well, had a comfortable retirement where he was free to pursue his own interests at his leisure. Lived to the grand old age of 96, too. An all-round (sadly rare) success story.
One guy that is pretty well off that you wouldn't necessarily think would be is Ike Quartey. He went back home to Ghana a very rich man and ended up building some hospitals there. His good friend Winky Wright has done a good job hanging on to his money as well. Both those guys got out without taking to much damage and are pretty secure financially. Tito has done well for himself also.
I'm not sure if Archie Moore was that intelligent. He used unnecessarily long words as though he was trying too hard to sound clever. That's something clever people don't need to do.
Good for them, always nice to hear of ex-fighters doing so well. Boxing is the hardest sport of all in my opinion
Regardless, he came to our school and told us the importance of a good education, and how important how you live your life is what matters. Some parents do not teach these basic things to their young, then the young grow up to be disrespectful and lack ambition in life. Maybe he mispronounced his words, but he was a good man and human being, he was not an immature self centered individual. He was a great fighter as well, he really cared for the youth, these fighters today, do not care, all there is is all this drama.
Unfortunately Tito lost a huge portion in earnings when his advisor put some money into some government bonds. I think he ended up winning a little bit back maybe $5-10m, but he is reported to have lost over $50m.
I'm not disputing any of that. I'm saying that he didn't strike me as being a highly intelligent man.
