An Ode To The Sweet Science

    By Lee Wylie

To state the obvious, the history of boxing is an especially rich one. Perhaps more than any other sport, its past enriches the present. Serious enthusiasts of ''The SWeet Science'' devote untold hours comparing champions from different eras, debating the question of who could beat who, which boxers of today possess the skills to compete with the masters of the past. And for those with such an abiding passion for boxing, the latest creation from esteemed analyst and video auteur Lee Whylie will be especially fascinating.

In what could be regarded as a “love letter” in video form to the ancient art of pugilism, as well as a video masterpiece, Wylie takes inspiration from the extraordinary talent of one Vasyl Anatoliyovych Lomachenko to create an epic portrait – with a vast, all-star cast – of boxing at its highest level, a veritable catalogue of the endless array of tactics, maneuvers and stratagems deployed by the true experts of prizefighting, from years past to the present day. Get your popcorn and settle in, fight freaks. This is one ardent “ode” to which you will want to give your full attention. Not to mention repeated viewings. Check it out:

I dunno, going 396-1 as an amateur fighting at the elite of the elite level since your teens against the best the world has to offer and many different styles, solitary controversial loss avenged x 2, winning 2 Olympic golds and World Amateur golds at different weights whilst being undersized at the second one, European gold, World Junior gold and from the P4P#1 as an amateur to the P4P#1 in the pros in just 11 or 12 fights and becoming a three-weight champ in just 12 fights, especially when you're a natural 126 pounder and were often giving up a significant amount of weight, reach or both in your first two divisions, let alone up in your third, is pretty ''great'' and it takes someone rather special to achieve it in my not so humble opinion.

Not to mention beating 8 (should be 9 had he not been robbed) former, current or future world champions in just 15 fights, 14 of them being world title fights, winning all your fights on the road as a pro via clean boxing and the application of pure skill, no deck-stacking or fouling the crap out of your opponents, and making four world class or world champions fighters quit in a row, quality fighters who've never displayed an ounce of quit before.

Pretty impressive to only incur a solitary loss in over 400 amateur fights and come back with gold from every single tournament you entered with the exception of just one when you came home with a silver. Kind of great me thinks.

I agree with you that Loma is special (great docu by the way). The only problem, unfortunately, is that he isn't in an era with other ATG opponents to square off against and show his mettle. He is in a more transitional period for his divisions and needs to do great feats / records to become great instead (which isn't bad, but it always leaves a 'what if' debate imo).

And some of the fan boy rantings and ravings are downright disrespectful to all the historical fighters and legends who came before him and proved much more.

Truly an awesome video. This will be getting re watched many times. It is a small dream, for me, for someone like Lee to make a Tony Canzoneri video.
