I think Kostya Tszyu has done well for himself. He moved back to Russia and apparently has a lot of products and things over there and he’s still very famous. I think I read somewhere that he’s made more money after boxing than he did in the ring and he did earn well.
Archie was hugely intelligent. I love reading interviews with him. He could quote some of the great writers, Shakespeare, Twain, Hemmingway off the top of his head. He also had a wonderfully grounded logic.
Yep, sounds like a guy trying too hard to impress... The impression I get of Moore (which may be wrong, I admit) is that he would have his quotes of classic authors prepared in advance so he could use them in the interview and make it all look off the cuff.
Dave Charnley did very well. He got into property development. He had a suite of offices in Mayfair and changed his Rolls every 2 years. Dave was a multi millionaire. Terry Downes was another success. He sold his chain of betting shops to the William Hill organisation. He had a nice spread in Kent and all 3 of his children went to top public schools. Jim Watt bought into a BMW dealership in Glasgow. As well as that, he was a brilliant and famous Boxing summariser for nearly 30 years. Tony Sibson started his own construction business doing bespoke design and build projects. He lives in a converted coaching lodge in the Leicestershire countryside worth over £1m. Sadly, the stories of Boxers being separated from their money in retirement outnumber the good news stories but it's good to hear about Fighters doing well after their careers.
Just curious, do any of the fighters today, have any intellect? And if so who?. Do they care about others? In Archie Moore's era, The Great Depression was happening in this world, and people did not have food to eat or a roof over their heads. Fighters fought to eat, they did not go to school, it was a bad time, in some ways like today. Fighters back then did not act like Clowns like they do today.
Amir Khan does a lot for inner city kids through his foundation, not just in Bolton but in areas throughout the UK including Birmingham.
That is a great thing that he does help the youth. But he better be careful, in case he mispronounces his words, Just kidding, Lol.
Archie Moore was damn clever. Make no mistake. The guy just liked to create mystiques about himself. He was a swarve, mysterious guy.
Larry not only built his dream house (with a boxing glove-shaped pool), he still AFIK lives in it today ... he was still residing there fairly recently in some documentary that filmed him. That’s smart: built it, paid it off immediately so no interest and no house payment. The office building in Easton he rented as the post office and other U.S. government offices. He talks about it in his book (I think that’s where I read it) — some businesses were willing to pay a little higher rent, but he got IIRC a 50-year lease and he talks about knowing you can 100 percent count on the rent being paid in full and on time every month, and you’re going to get paid as long as there is a USA. Smart, smart guy with his money. Never had to have the huge entourage, the big flashy car or bling or the need to travel by private jet, married his wife Diane in 1979 and they are still together.
