Favorite unpopular fighters/fighters who don't get much recognition? I'll go with Zab Judah, never hear him talked about on here.
Does anyone remember Ray Windmill White from the early 1970's ? He lost to Lonnie Bennett, Roger Rouse, and Mike Quarry, on points. He was colorful with his Wind up Backhand.
Most of the fighters not on Showtime or HBO. Especially foreign fighters that did not travel to America.
Hell, half the folks on this forum never bothered to watch like MSG network fights. Or Prime Ticket. The regional networks. Even the nationwide older ESPN stuff or Score.
Arturo Frias. Gino Gelomino Larry Stanton Sylvester Kennon James Pipps Billy Papke Curtis Parker Jorge Castro Mickey Goodwin
Corrie Sanders, but that's probably because he chose to box out of South Africa, and picked up a minor belt, WBU, before koing Wlad for the much more legitimate WBO title.
There a lots, a few in recent times are Bernard Hopkins, Oscar De La Hoya, and Felix Trinidad. It seems like hardly anyone mentions these guys and they'll be in the IBHOF.
Here's a few good, often underappreciated fighters imo, I liked watching some years ago- Brian Mitchell, Johnny Tapia, Bobby Czyz, Sean O'Grady, Marlon Starling, Jorge Paez, Scott Olsen.
The not getting much hype depends on who you speak to. The average fan you’d find most of the greats we discuss here don’t get much hype but among the type of fan you see here it’s totally different. I’m a big fan of Bantamweights particularly the scene from the 50s through to the 80s. I feel the likes of Jofre, Harada, Olivares, Zarate get their credit but the following personal favorites fly under the radar: Jose Medel, Jose Becerra, Chucho Castillo, Rafael Herrera, Rodolfo Martinez, Lionel Rose, Alberto Dávila. I’ve spoke to Jofre and Harada who both vouched for how good (in fact they said great) Medel is. A view I got from people who saw him live up close too. Becerra was a wonderful champion and though his reign wasn’t long he was a great fighter to watch and perhaps before losing his last fight would be a match for anyone. In fact it would appear Manuel Ortiz doesn’t get much press at all. Unfortunately footage is limited but so too is press on him. Considering he has a unique story that ended in tragedy (those always make good books) there has never been a book written on him. He was an extremely popular fighter in Southern Cali performing often at the Hollywood Legion. He also traveled the world fighting. I think the most lengthy piece you can find written on him may be Flea’s excellent piece.
I loved Windmill White. Man, my Dad would get such a kick out of him with his wild assortment of punches, feigning injury, chatter and general showmanship. I tell ya, he would be sought after today and would be worth a bundle with his antics.
