I wouldn't say he avoided punchers his whole career. Toney was a puncher, Sosa was a puncher, Reggie Johnson and McCallum were good punchers, Richard Hall, and of course Tarver despite him going 1-2 against him.

I would say Eder Jofre at Bantam. Also Ruben Olivares . Benny Leonard retired undefeated at Lightweight. How long was Jimmy Wide Flyweight Champ?
Also, sorry to bring it up because Jones's fans go barmy, the question of PED use will always hang over Roy to many of us.

    Richard Hall?

An old McCallum with a gut? He wasn't even a puncher at 154 or 160.

Tony Thornton was a bigger puncher than all of them mentioned. Hopkins laid guys out with his right hand too in the 90s, though it wasn't Thornton powerful.

Yeah, and beat him twice by KO.
Jofre did lose to Harada though. ;)

Hagler's PRE-world title opposition was better that Roy's world title opposition, when you consider Brisoe-esque Thornton was post-retirement and stopped because his shoulder popped out (still evading most of that 25-punch combo from Jones with a popped shoulder..).

Had Jones unified with McClellan you could say he had something of a Hearns or Mugabi defense. He didn't.

McCallum wasn’t a puncher at that point. Hall?

Jones resume is sorely lacking savage punchers despite several being available throughout all the weight classes he fought in in his career. Wonder why?

Wasn't that when Jofre came back George ? I refuse to Boxrec when I'm on here, it's a good test of memory!

Nope. Slap bang in his prime for the first one. He retired after the 2nd one, but I think he was prime for both.

The problem here is that no one will ever know. Jones didn’t face everyone at that weight and as a lot of people pointed out had a habit of avoiding big punchers. Jones jr. himself admitted he didn’t want to end up like McClellan.

Well, you live and learn. So you'll give me Olivares then or am I walking on to another counter punch ?

Olivares lost to Chucho Castillo in his BW prime. He did beat him twice, though.

I love Olivares tho, so I'll let you have it.
