Almost all of the boxers who I have met (and, I have met: Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Bert Cooper, Julian Jackson, Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns, Shane Mosley, Iran Barkley, Marvin Johnson, Michael Spinks, Michael Moorer, Prince Charles Williams, Buster Douglas, Kelly Pavlik, Terry Norris, Shannon Briggs, Micky Ward, Sugar Ray Seals, Ray Mercer) have all been great ****ing guys. Genuine people. Very down to earth. But, i alao spent some time with Magic Johnson years ago when I lived in a hotel in Cleveland. He was an egocentric, arrogant douche-bag. Total *******. Nothing like his fake public persona.

 

I met George foreman at a book signing and he was really nice. He said that he was not supposed to personalize signatures. But I told him he was my hero, I had been with him since the beginning of his comeback, and any time I doubt myself I think of him. He personalized my book signature for me.

Maybe a small thing but I thought it was cool.

Not boxers but I have also met Clive Barker and Asia Argento. Both first rate people and Barker is as gracious and gentlemanly as you can possibly imagine.

Used to train as a teenager at the Indy PAL and Marvin Johnson was the "Coach". Never seemed interested in us kids who were vying for spots on "his" team. Not friendly or personable, but never was nasty or deliberately cold. Seemed distant and I saw him probably 50 times in between fights.

Maybe ten years later, found out he moved to my side of town and frequented my corner 7-11 and spoke to the female store manager about him, expecting a good report. She said he was surly and that they suspected he was opening up dog food bags in a bag aisle and cupping handfuls into his pockets and were considering asking him not to come back in because of this "theft". She was serious. This would've been right about the end of his career in the late 80's. Just bizarre.
