The shortest you wll find Tunney listed anywhere is 6' 0". I defy you to link me a source for anything shorter. Though you can find taller. You can see Baer listed at 6' 2", as the man whose Father knew his son testified to above. Look up the reach too: these are not nearly "extreme" differences. That would be more like comparing Lewis to Tyson or Tua. Where the reach alone is over a foot discrepancy! It is simple boxing knowledge that you need not have the advantage of wingspan or height to outjab or do better fighting from the outside. If the shorter man is quicker, more agile, has better timing, has better footwork, moves out of range successfully...Of course as often has been the case, he will do better even from range. Tunney easily could outjab Baer. He also could box on the inside & then get out, like Conn & many others. Someone like Tyson could outjob much longer & taller opponents. Baer even near his prime was beaten by men not as fast & skilled as Tunney. Tunney only lost once against 65 victories.
Tyson did outjab taller opponents, but he did it coming forward to set up attacks he didn't do it defensively going backwards as Tunney would have to, but yeah boxrec had Tunney down as 5'11, but it is 6'0 now so that must have been his height
Sergio Martinez was 5'10 and easily outboxed the 6 ft julio cesar Chavez Jr. 6'2 jimmy young outboxed 6'3/6'4 Foreman. 6'3 David Haye outboxed 7 ft Valuev. Height and reach doesn't make you immune to being outboxed. Baer did not have a very great jab and couldn't outbox someone with half of Tunney's skills. He was a brawler and a sloppy one at that. I'm pretty sure even Andre Ward could outbox him.
If you watch Jimmy Young vs George Foreman, you can see that they're actually the same height and I'm saying that he cannot outjab him or box in the centre of the ring, he would have to use lateral movement like Haye did to Valuev, but Baer is no Valuev, he has a good jab himself and if he's that much taller Tunney and Baer has a good jab himself then it's hard for Tunney to box him from the outside, he has to take it to him and that is a bad idea, and the examples that you mentioned, none of the taller guys except foreman had good jabs, Baer does
https://www.shutterstock.com/editor...-and-jimmy-young-boxeer-new-york-usa-6595682a No they are not. Foreman has to narrow his gaze and lower his head yet he's awkwardly looking at Young's forehead in this face off. He's quite clearly an inch or 2 taller. You don't watch enough boxing. There are dozens of fights where a shorter man outboxed a taller opponent. Other posters have already explained this to you but you are being stubborn. Hell i was just an amateur sparring partner and I was able to outbox taller opponents in the gym. Max Baer is easy to hit and has a weak guard. His chin and reflexes were the only things saving him from having way more stoppages on his record. Tunney was not only faster, he had way better timing, accuracy, a better jab, better everything except raw power. They are not in tbe same class. It's only a 2 inch height difference you're acting like this is a fight between an actual bear and a coyote or something. Baer does not use his jab consistently enough. He absolutely could get outboxed even at ring center. Tunney has 2 things could defense and timing, ever heard if them? He would wait for an opening and then nail him, being at ring center doesn't mean you are forced to simply trade punches with a taller opponent or get beaten to the punch simply due to reach. That's not how boxing works lol.
Tyson was a modified swarmer so he did not go backwards. Tunney would not need to only jab when loving backwards-with greater speed, timing & agility he could jump in & out as many even smaller opponents did-such as Conn, during the peak of Joe Louis. Principles & examples of how many shorter & less long boxers outbox their opponents have been amply demonstrated by others above. Even things like Young clearly looking shorter than Foreman. And nowhere is Young listed as above 6' 2"-when often these numbers are rounder up, almost never the opposite. Devon, you are new here. I hope you might be the unusual person, certainly here, that has a strong & healthy enough Ego... To admit when you are wrong on obvious matters of fact..
Ok, Larry Holmes was getting outjabbed by Gerry Cooney for most of the fight and we all know that Holmes has a miles better jab, and there was only 2-3 inches difference in height so it does make a lot of difference
