Different strengths and weaknesses, so you can argue it either way.

Most people seem to like Schmeling's work a bit better, and so do I.

When I think of Schmeling and Sharkey in that era, I think it's very close. They're a good match for each other.

Max had wins over Joe Louis, Mickey Walker, Uzcudun, Stribling, Risko, Foord and the DQ victory over Sharkey to win the HW title. This is overlooked and it's a nice achievement by Max, he was both European champion at light heavy and heavyweight. He was stopped by Max Baer and quickly in the return by Louis.

Jack had wins over Harry Wills, George Godfrey, Carnera, Risko, Stribling, Loughran and the controversial win over Schmeling to win the HW title. He lost the title to Carnera, drew with Walker, lost later to Loughran and was beaten by Louis in his last fight.

I get the feeling that perhaps Max was just a little more consistently good than Jack. Maybe I prefer Schmeling's resume just a little more. Very close though imo.

Schmeling has easilly the best win, over Louis, but overwise I think Sharkey has more depth.

Do you take losses into account too?

Schmeling by a mile. A win over Joe Louis is much greater achievementr than anything Jack did in his career

I don't think there's that much to split them on loss wise

I’m not sure he was even that good of a fireman. Exactly when was he able to put out fires between his training and fight schedule?
