This is a mismatch. There's ZERO case to be made for Honeyghan beating the Montreal Duran. Zero. What in the HELL has Honeyghan got to offer that Duran didn't see against Leonard and Palomino? A guy with Honeyghan's style is made in Heaven for Duran. Duran gives Honeyghan a horrible beating and stops him circa 8. Probably would look very similar to the Moore fight.
The reason I made this is because Honeyghan is a natural welterweight, Duran was coming up 2 weight divisions, and I seen that Kirkland Laing was able to outbox Duran in Duran's prime and Leonard decided to trade with Duran in the first fight, so I thought Honeyghan may have some chance if he decided to box
Duran was in his "prime" when he lost to Laing? Lord Jesus... Was Honeyghan in his prime when Breland destroyed him? Duran blew hot and cold for the rest of his career after the first Leonard fight. But since we're using the first Leonard fight version of Duran, what case can be made for Honeyghan "outboxing" Duran? You probably have a poor understanding of what "boxing" means, cause Duran was by far better at that than Honeyghan.
For once you and I are on the same page. Leonard could have stood flat footed and still destroyed Honeyghan. Honeyghan is a weird one in Mythical Matchups... sometimes he's undersold. And then there's times like this... when he's greatly overrated. He wouldn't beat Palomino, let alone Duran.
Honeyghan was not in it anymore by the Breland fight and Duran was, he became middleweight champion years later when he schooled Barkley and that was 6 years after the Laing fight, whereas Honeyghan did nothing in his career after the Breland fight so he was a hell of a lot more washed in the Breland fight than Duran was in the Laing fight, I didn't even say he beats Duran I'm saying he does have some chsnce
No, he doesn't have a chance. How? What's he gonna do? Dance around the ring gracefully like Ray Leonard or Ray Robinson? Use superb defensive reflexes like Wilfred Benitez? Honeyghan was an offensive-minded attacking fighter. He wasn't a finesse guy. He had plenty of holes in his defense, and when he fought a counterpuncher like Starling all of those holes were exposed. Duran has an overwhelmingly huge edge on Honeyghan in terms of skill, infighting, accuracy, stamina, and above all... ring IQ. Honeyghan was brash and arrogant, that alone would **** Duran off and motivate him to punish Lloyd.
Last thing I'll add is that Donald Curry was a great fighter and I think Dubblechin undersells him. But you'll never hear me say that Curry was on the level of Leonard/Duran/Hearns, cause he wasn't. Curry stood a bit straight up, and had a bad tendency of pull STRAIGHT back from punches... a big weakness which Honeyghan exposed, and later McCallum exposed quite famously. Those right hands Honeyghan bounced off of Curry's face would not be landing on the Montreal Duran.
Lol. It's not that serious man. Leave it. Theres far bigger mismatches on here than this. Go open a Honeyghan vs Palomino thread. That's far more debatable
