A reduction in disposable income does not mean an end to disposable income. In a country where sport is such a big thing I'd be surprised if any real bubble burst in that sense.

Far more impact on the travel industry for example. Flights will become more expensive, the logistics of travel will be hit by the virus anyway, so people will not be able to spend on going abroad. I can also see big impacts on middle-ground status goods. People will need cars for example, but the guy who was considering an Audi/Mercedes may now very well be thinking one step down the ladder. Same with clothes.

Sport will be a relatively cheap bit of escapism. If there's Premier League football on television over the summer, even for behind closed doors matches, the viewing figures will be absolutely astronomical.

 

I think it depends on how the model is set and how people view big fights. There is still clearly major interest in boxing in this country: viewing figures are high, people buy lots of PPV's and so on. Boxers are well known and broadly popular figures. It's been a boom period for the sport in the last ten years which, Hatton and to an extent Calzaghe aside, wasn't perhaps as highly reflected in the 2000's.

You are right to say people will have less money; but I can't see pay per view fights and therefore purses ending. They just generate too much money. And people will find ways to pay. Getting your friends around to split the cost of a PPV and watching it with a takeaway and a few cans is a cheaper night in than a night in the pub for example.

 

Sly Sports were losing huge amounts of subscribers months before this crisis - the snowball began to roll downhill and this has gathered great speed which will take a huge effort to stabilise then grow the customer base.

Would not be surprised if the football contracts are renegotiated but the arris is about to fall out of it anyway as the world enters the worst global recession seen.

The longer the lockdown lasts the bigger the hole.

The days of Pudding Whyte, Parker or Haye earning multi-millions for Lineal Pudding Title fights are gone and so is Eh Day's £24.99 PPVs.

The price of everything about to fall from a great height.

 

I hope so mate but i see it from a different angle. Sky like BT Sports are only interested in EPL rights, so i think they will try screw other sports. Boxing is the only one were they can get big ppv revenue to help plug loses. So i think we are likely to see an increase in ppvs for that reason.

 

There will be much less disposable income around and PPVs will be way down the list of priorities for people.

The world has changed and the global economy could take years to recover - many have still not grasped this yet talking about a return to normal life and living standards by the end of July.

Much pain ahead for many people.

 

I agree but many people have as much or more money than before. Take someone working just now as normal or even those on Furlogh, they are spending less money currently as most things are closed. I was only speaking to someone yesterday who is on bemefits and they have never been so well off. They have saved few grand since this started. People will be desperate to get entertained again. I personally hope im wrong about ppvs.

 

Exactly and all this has to be repaid back to the government via significant taxation hikes to go with the mass unemployment about to hit many people.

The arris is about to fall out the trousers mate and hard times ahead for a while.

 

Some people will be in this bracket. But taxes will go up and it's unlikely any significant number of people will be genuinely better off after this. We also have the likely disaster that is Brexit round the corner.

But as has been said, less disposable income does not mean no disposable income. People moan about the costs of everything of course, but watching sport is incredibly popular. Savings will be made in other areas before people decide they aren't going to watch.

 

You would like to think that this would be the kick up the ass needed for Football/ Boxing to start reducing wages/purses.

However this week I have watched Eddie Hearn offer Andy Ruiz 5 million dollars to fight Dillian Whyte so maybe that's wishful thinking.

I’d love some normal Sky fight nights and no PPVs every other show.

I feel the exact same as you about football. I’d love them to all take massive pay cuts. Liverpool fan all my life, I wasn’t born when they last won the league but for the reasons you mention I’ve fell out of love with it hugely. I’m gutted because I should be over the moon with this season but I just don’t care and feel robbed that it couldn’t have happened years ago when it meant something.

Anyway, I think the whole thing is being over played. The show off, keeping up with the jones’ culture is massive in this country now. I think it’ll take more than this to make people change their ways. I remember if a BMW, Merc or Audi drove past you’d say to your mate “boss that”. Now every knob head 30 year old in his mar’s box room and girl who works 6 hours a week in Tesco has them. I don’t think this will change anything.
