Revisited Edwin Rosario v Howard Davis just now for the first time since seeing it live in '84. Not slam-bang but just enough to say it was a good fight and damn close.

    Round 1: 10-9 Rosario
    Round 2: 10-8 Rosario (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-9 Davis
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Davis
    Round 7: 10-9 Davis
    Round 8: 10-9 Davis
    Round 9: 10-9 Davis
    Round 10: 10-9 Rosario
    Round 11: 10-10 Even
    Round 12: 10-8 Rosario (scores a knockdown)

Total: 115-114 Rosario (actual scores were 115-114 and 117-113 for Rosario and 114-113 for Davis)

That 117-113 for Rosario seemed out of line. Even the first time I saw it I thought Rosario just nicked it in the 12th due to the knockdown. Damn close.

If I knew how to post videos I'd put that one up alongside the first Rosario-Ramirez fight. Two that really could have gone either way.

The right hand that caught Rosario in the third when he squared up was as close as I ever saw him to hitting the canvas. Ironic, considering how featherfisted Davis was.

I just did a quick search on this thread for others input on Rosario v Davis and found only sweet scientist scored this some 10 years back. For scoring addicts like ourselves, this bout really needs to be looked at.

Right hook to get the KD in the first was splendid.

Absolutely outrageous decision. Not a fan.

Park battled fatigue, and ate some tough counters but I don't see the 'uncommon heart', just a normal day in the office.

    Really good fight, though.

Typical Tokyo special those days. And in all fairness, same thing happened all the time in Seoul and Bangkok as well.

Something I read once, I think in a YouTube comment that I Google translated from Korean, so take it with as much skepticism as you think you need, is that Gibbs scored the first round 10-9, thus depriving Park of the draw. I guess it didn't matter, as he still would have been robbed of the title win that he deserved, and he was still able to get a rematch anyway.

    Shawn Porter UD12 Danny Garcia

Here's a ***** one: Porter waits for Garcia in the first round for a fair spell, and probably out-jabs Garcia; big right hand, high on the head, wins Garcia the round right at the bell. Fascinating between rounds to hear Porter say that he "feel" Garcia ready to punch him whenever he goes in, so he can't get his fast pace going. That's a gorgeous little insight, worth noting. Porter continues his moving style in the second but he comes in hard when he comes. Garcia tags him though...takes the round once more. Porter needs to be careful here. He can overspend in the middle rounds and Garcia will tag him late.

Big third coming...Porter goes to the outside again. He's actually circling like he wants to avoid exchanges, it's bizarre. He does have a good successful rush there, but he gets hit with two hard clean punches in this fight. His rushing, clubbing shots aren't closing the gap for me. Third was close though; can't see it given to Porter though personally. Maybe Porter is looking to hold his shot late, but overall this seems a flawed fight plan. OK, finally, here he comes in the fourth, clearly wins it, clearly out-works and mauls the superior boxer. Six more of them and the fight is his. Garcia gets the jab working in the fifth; also outworks him to the body (!). I don't think that Porter will win this fight on my card now. Garcia has really spooked Porter here. Sixth is must-win for Porter, and he probably just about out-hits Garcia, better pressure too. But now the seventh is absolutely must win, I think, because he doesn't tend to do well in the closing rounds. But yeah, yep, probably gets it, Porter isn't brilliant but he opens up the round big time, lots of punches going both ways, Porter probably just nicks the round not the volume. Now he's in the fight. Taking a close, excellent, competitive eighth on jab/bodywork, I have the fight all square; when he gives the big pressure in the ninth and Garcia lands three hard punches i'm at a loss. I gave it to Porter, it could legitimately have gone the other way. Even round. So after all that I've got Porter in the lead after nine.

Garcia doing good bodywork in close when Porter brings pressure in the tenth which feels like the key round now. And it is Porter's. Unreal, what a swing around, I don't think Porter can lose now after not being able to think he was able to win after five  Another very good round. Garcia is boxing well but hasn't won a round on my card since the fifth! I have him winning the twelfth though, to make it 115--113 Porter on my card. What a weird fight. I gave Porter 9,10 and 11 but they were all arguable, all extremely close, and they all could have gone the other way. I'm surprised this wasn't considered controversial.

    Porter: 4,6,7,8,9,10,11,
    Garcia: 1,2,3,5,12.

    7-5 Porter.

Alfonso Lopez v Shoji Oguma - 5 point must scoring system in effect

    Round 1: 5-4 Lopez
    Round 2: 5-3 Lopez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 5-5 Even
    Round 4: 5-4 Lopez
    Round 5: 5-4 Oguma
    Round 6: 5-4 Lopez
    Round 7: 5-4 Lopez
    Round 8: 5-4 Oguma
    Round 9: 5-4 Lopez
    Round 10: 5-5 Even
    Round 11: 5-4 Lopez
    Round 12: 5-4 Lopez
    Round 13: 5-4 Oguma
    Round 14: 5-4 Lopez
    Round 15: 5-4 Oguma

Total: 71-65 Lopez (actual scores were 72-65 and 73-67 for Lopez and of course the outlandish 71-71 Draw ballot along party lines from the Japanese judge.

To begin, this is really the first time I am seeing Oguma fight and to tell you the truth, he doesn't so much fight as lunge. And with him being southpaw and Lopez orthodox, these two were cracking heads all night. I'm sure their respective cuts were caused by butts. As for Oguma's lunges, there were about 3 times he ended up on the canvas from a missed lunge and several more times he zipped right past a side-stepping Lopez with his momentum. Lopez was conservative with his shots and counters and fully deserved the decision. I should also take referee Larry Rozadilla to task for constant warning but never took a point away from Oguma. The worst offense being a shameless and obvious take-down in the 15th round which should have cost him a point. Well that's my take anyway.

Ki-Jun Lee versus Paul Banke, WBC Super-Bantamweight title, 1990

Anyone who hasn't seen this tremendous Super-Bantamweight war should check it out when they get a chance. Everyone remembers Banke's incredible and brutal trilogy against Daniel Zaragoza, but this fight wouldn't have looked out of place in that series at all.

Lee and Banke stuck to each other like glue for most of this fight and the amount of punches thrown and landed was crazy, particularly by Lee. Fantastic pace to the fight throughout with both men having their lead eyes (right for Banke, left for Lee) completely swollen shut by around the eighth or ninth round. Both of them soaked up an horrendous amount of punishment, and though Lee lost a point for head use in the eighth, there were countless low blows which went unpunished from both men.

In general, Lee was hooking to the body a little better and looked the stronger man right up close, pushing Banke back more than vice versa, whereas Banke landed the better straight punches to the head in the few exchanges where there was any range between them.

Everyone knows that Banke was one hard, tough little bloke with an incredible will, and if you needed any further proof you've got it here. He looked absolutely exhausted and broken in rounds 9 and 10, and much of 11 too. But towards the end of that round he found a fantastic right hand to catch Lee when he was wide open and swinging for a possible finish himself, and two more massive lefts to his unguarded chin to put him down right at the end of the round. Lee hadn't recovered in time for the 12th, but showed immense courage and toughness himself to somehow get up from two knockdowns in the last round, despite taking so many sickening and clean shots to the head. The referee, rightly in my view, decided once he'd inspected him after the second knockdown that he couldn't allow him to continue.

The fight was an even split on the judges' cards going into the twelfth (104-105 Lee, 105-103 Banke and 103-103 on the third card) so Banke really did pull this one out of the fire just when he needed it. Those scores are all perfectly acceptable and not too different from mine which I'll post here, and show what a close and outstanding fight this was. A really fantastic and exciting war.

    Lee: Rounds 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10.
Banke: Rounds 1, 2, 3, 7 and 11 (10-8). I had the eighth round a 9-9 as though Lee lost a point, it was his round otherwise.

So my score going into the last round was 104-103 Banke. Brutal and brilliant fight.
