If he had not been locked up, how would he have done? Could he have made it to being considered an ATG?

There's two ways of looking at it.

If he hadn't lost several years of his prime, maybe he'd have been champ.

On the other hand, if he hadn't been in prison, he might not have been focused enough on boxing due to the...extracurricular activities...that he was involved in and which led to his incarceration.

I feel like whatever happened, he'd somehow have come up short. Conteh or Galindez would have been his likely opponent for the title if he'd not missed those years, and I don't see him beating them.

Yeah, him being incarcerated could have actually been good for his boxing career in a way. Life on the streets may have kept him out of the gym as much as he needed to be.

I think that James Scott would have had a fairly good career, as a talented poster mentioned, he would have faced the likes of John Conteh or Victor Galindez, possibly Matthew Saad Muhammad. The location would have made a difference as Conteh liked to defend his title in London. Victor in either Luna Park or in Italy. Saad Muhammad liked to fight in Atlantic City. This because there would be no money to be made fighting at Rahway State Prison.

Let’s give credit to Eddie Mustafa Muhammad for even agreeing to fight him in the first place

James Scott vs Qawi at Rahway was like that World Series when the Mets played the Yankees.

I don't think he'd have done particularly well in the grand scheme of things. Probably be a bit better than say, Rossman.

We missed some damn good fights though.

I do .. Scott was a monster against Mustafa and pretty bad ass against Lopez .. I consider Conteh and Galindez half a step below the guys that followed right after like Saad and Johnson ands Mustafa and a full step below Spinks and Qwai .. I think Scott had a hell of a shot against either of them ..

About the same imo. He was a good contender but not elite. His win against Galindez was impressive.
