    two heavyweights from the "golden heavyweight era", that have two things in common:
    1.) a granite chin, both were (almost) impossible to knock out;
    2.) both lost to (almost) every top/elite/alltime great, they ever faced.

    fantasy fight: in reality 15 years apart, both fight at their very best here.

    in the red corner:
    GEORGE CHUVALO with a record of 73 / 18 / 2 (acc. to boxrec.com);
    best defeated fighters: a young jerry quarry and an old cleveland williams.

    in the blue corner:
    RANDALL "TEX" COBB with a record of 42 / 7 / 1 (acc. to boxrec.com);
    best defeated fighters: bernardo mercado and an old ernie shavers.

    interestingly both have (almost) the same ko-ratio: 68 %.
    "tex" has a slightly better record, is taller and therefore (i suppose) heavier, so he has some advantages on his side.

    how does this turn out in your view? - i am undecided, as i do not know them well enough and can only go by boxrec.com.
    one thing´s for sure in my view: this will last for full 15 rounds (or 12, if you want).

    Although they both have A+ chins, their levels of skill are vastly different. Chuvalo is a much better fighter than the likeable, but limited Cobb. Chuvalo wins by wide decision.

    Gepoge Chuvalo in a long career was never knocked off of his feet, he was TKO'd by Joe Frazier in 1967 and George Foreman in 1970, He holds knockout wins against Jerry Quarry in 1969 and Manuel Ramos in 1968. He also lost to Muhammad Ali by unanimous decisions in 1966 and 1972. He was also defeated by Floyd Patterson in 1965 and also Ernie Terrell the same year. He also lost a majority decision to Oscar Bonavena in 1966. Randall Tex Cobb was also a very durable iron chinned fighter, he holds wins over Ken Norton and Earnie Shavers in 1980, both knockouts. He did have two losses to Michael Dokes by decisions. Tex Cobb went 15 rounds with then WBC World Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes on Nov 26 1982 in fight that was televised by HBO. Larry hit Cobb with everything but Tex did not go down. Cobb and Chuvalo would in a sense resemble the Chuvalo vs Bonavena bout with both fighters trying to out muscle the other. Both fighters would be marked up, George by majority decision.

    Chuvalo was clearly better than Cobb, someone like Uzcudun would be more interesting.

    you are mistaken, richard, that cobb "holds wins over ken norton and ernie shavers in 1980, both knockouts".
    norton won this one via split decision. i think you might have mixed it up with norton vs. shavers.

    of course, you are right about cobb´s ko win against ernie shavers.
    i edited "tex" cobb´s "best defeated fighters", mentioning shavers, too.

    I could actually see Chuvalo stopping Cobb late with his brutal body punching. He had nice left hooks too and might be able to swell up Cobb's eyes. He could drag him into deep waters and drown him in the 15th. Not likely but possible. I would expect Chuvalo to win an ugly close decision more often than not.

    I like George Chuvalo by a decision. Randall Cobb was a decent fighter but Chuvalo was a bit more skilled and beat better fighters

    Nice thread idea. Give me all the George Chuvalo takes!

    I see the fight mostly even through the first ten rounds with Cobb landing well early. I think George's body work starts to pay dividends from there and pulls him out a UD in the championship rounds. IMO Chuvalo would have the stamina edge anyway, not sure Cobb ever went 15 outside of the Holmes fight. But at 12 rounds it would probably be close.

    When asked about his best career wins Chuvalo often starts with his KO of Doug Jones. Sure wish I could find a copy of that Williams fight though.

    The fight with Cleveland Williams fight took place on Nov 17 1971, the under card of Ali vs Mathis in Houston, Texas..

    Cobb to Larry Holmes: Next time we fight in a phone booth.

    Larry: OK, you give me a call.
