Fights you're glad never happened?

Sounds ludicrous I know, but around the British scene mid 70s their was talk of should Stracey beat Palomino, then a superfight between hims and ( wait for it............. Monzon could happen OMG.

 

Never knew this about a 4th fight. Thank God!

Aaron Pryor vs Sugar Ray Leonard, 1982. This was pure speculation before the detached Retina was discovered. Salvador Sanchez vs Alexis Arguello was talked about before Sanchez untimely passing. It would be at 130 lbs.

 

Curry when Mugabi was #1 ranked and after a title shot for awhile. Similarly, when they were talking about Curry fighting Hagler.

 

I used to anxiously await the boxing magazines every month. I think it was the November 1977 World Boxing that had it as a cover story, with Frazier supposedly saying something like, "I'll whup Clay in Superfight 4!" (He was still calling Ali "Clay"). For years I assumed that the editors of World Boxing were just making up a story, but recently I was looking through newspaper archives and found a couple of stories on it, that it was being discussed or someone made an offer to stage it. Thankfully, the idea seems to have died pretty quickly.

 

I think it was Dundee who said that - though I could be wrong.

This fight is more intriguing than people may imagine. Chamberlain may have been the greatest raw athlete in American history; and that level of size, power, and speed cannot be underestimated in a fight. Provided he had the right training (I think Futch was going to train him) - and he was serious about learning to box and took his time - I would not be shocked if an upset occurred. A useful comparison is what happened when Bob Sapp took on Hoost. Hoost was arguably the greatest kickboxer in history, and perhaps no match shook the martial arts world than him getting knocked out by Bob Sapp. Sapp had been an offensive lineman for the Minnesota Vikings and decided to take up kickboxing and took on Hoost after just a few months of preparation (and steroid injections). And while Sapp's skills were primitive, his raw size allowed him to take huge shots from Hoost that would've felled most opponents; and Sapp was able to seriously hurt Hoost every time he landed - which was not often.

Of course, I am not saying Chamberlain would win. But I think sometimes people underestimate how much of an advantage the raw size and power of a huge man confers.

 

So I take it you were a fan of Sal and didn't want him to get hurt? Otherwise, I still don't understand your choice.

I'd imagine people would come down at about 50-50 on this fight, rather than the majority favoring Sanchez, by the way.

 

I wish this actually occurred, so Pryor could shut up about how the Fab Four avoided him. (For the record, I'd give him virtually no chance against any of the four.)

 

I wouldn't want to have watched Marvin Hagler slaughter an ailing "Superbad" Mays in 1981.

 

Hagler-Leonard II. Hagler was right to call bull**** and walk away.

Toney-either Klitschko. He'd have been killed.

Arguello-Duran. We all wanted it at the time, but now that it is all said an done, each man owns a comfortable legend, and there was no reason for either to have had the extra loss.

Oh dear. Sadly it would have generated money as well no doubt. They took so much out of each other in Manilla, if there was a 4th it wouldn't have been pretty.

2 shot fighters with a grudge would have been uneasy on the eye.
