Agree with 70s, Liston would be surely too big for the rock, solid , I mean solid jabs followed by heavy combos, for most ( if not all Rockys fights he fought guys of a similar height/weight ) think Sonny will either cut him badly for a stoppage, or knock him down enough times to force the ref to step in.
Pulitzer Prize winning Sports writer Red Smith on Rocky Marciano:" Marciano was the toughest...strongest...most completely dedicated fighter who ever wore gloves! Fear wasn't in his vocabulary...and pain had no meaning!" Sonny QUIT in the 2 most important fights of his life...Marciano beats him on heart alone!!!
Walcott hit his prime in 1948 and became good at old age!At 35 years old he was not old he was at his peak and he became champ late! Layne and LaStarza are in top 50!
There are a lot of high brow comments coming from the Liston fans: And wondrous open minded exhibits of thought like this:
He was awesome. A truly fantastic champion built from the ground on guts and hard work. His undefeated record and KO percentage has held up forever. I personally wouldn’t favor him to beat Sonny Liston but that doesn’t mean he can’t win nor that he’d go quietly.
Wow I leave the forum for a day and this is already 8 pages! This match-up came up when I was talking with my Grandpa whose an old boxing fan whose been following the sport for a while he said he thinks Liston could end it early but if Marciano can survive the early rounds he could tire out and starch liston but this discussion is really interesting keep up the great posts guys!!
In the 50s that was good age and again Walcott became good and finished product late and Foreman did that too! So 1939 Walcott who lost against bums would win against Walcott who gave Marciano and Louis helluva fight and beat Charles?
This one has been done to death before..... Styles make fights, a swarmer type vs a 30 pound heavier, stronger guy who is a big puncher with a smashing jab is pretty easy to predict in my opinion. Basically a repeat of Foreman vs Frazier 1 with Marciano stopped in a couple of rounds. Cheers All.
Sonny quit against Ali in Miami because he was spent. Ali beat him up. Then in the Lewiston rematch Liston most probably stayed down as long as he did to avoid the same kind of beating. To be fair, Sonny Liston was used and abused by his management. He lost his stomach for fighting maybe soon as he won the title.. After this Sonny reputedly turned down fights with Jimmy Ellis and others. Because He wasn’t interested in fights he might not win - perhaps because he had already been there and done that. Sonny was certainly at one time a great fighter but he certainly lost his appetite for boxing. all this has to be put into consideration when judging him against Great fighters who didn’t lose their appetite for winning.
This is an over simplification. You can not compare Foreman vs Frazier to a prime Marciano against anybody. Frazier was one handed and still getting over the career threatening serious health issues suffered in the first Ali fight. An exhibition and two easy fights (that he did not exactly shine in) later led to the first Foreman fight, a real disaster. And no wonder. It was a first real test since Frazier beat Ali. When joe was even more shopworn he actually lasted longer against Foreman! (So that blows the “couple of round” comparisons.) ...And this is supposed to represent a prime Marciano who hit with two hands, was more durable and didn’t have the blood pressure and eye issues?
