Charles and Walcott actually got beat up when they stayed inside. Fighting on the inside got them hurt and broken down, it was fighting on the outside which won Walcott rounds, and Charles did win rounds based on his fast hands and counters, since he won exchanges on the inside, but he did better when he stayed away. See here's where we're disagreeing on Marciano's key advantage in his style. I think he's a master of imposing himself on people, and quite mediocre at hunting people down. He didn't have the speed or the footwork, he just bulldozed them with strength and conditioning. Other than the example I already gave? No, sorry. I'm afraid I'll have to expose myself here, and say I've not even seen every Marciano title defence. I've seen Louis, Charles 1&2, Walcott, Layne and Moore. From what I know of Charles, Moore and Walcott, they're guys who fought on the outside primarily (or early in Moore's case) and liked to go on the inside to get off their offence. I can't actually name one out and out, high level, out-boxer, who Marciano fought off the top of my head. What I can tell, is that Rocky didn't draw these guys into an in-fight, he wanted an in-fight and it was often in their own interests to comply. Their styles lent themselves to it. Cutting and running wasn't gonna get Charles or Moore the title now, was it? Especially when Charles was robbed of winning title again for that exact thing. Moore had immense success throughout the early goings with his jab and counters. Charles did much better when he kept things at distance, so did Walcott. Not getting hit as much was always the given advice vs Marciano. With Liston however, I think that he'd know not to bash heads with Marciano and tough it out, and since his jab was good he wouldn't have to. Bearing in mind that a guy who's head-movement and footwork (and just overall ability of getting past as a jab) didn't do ****.
first of all, Thank you for your honesty. This will save a lot of time. Let me confirm I have arrived at my opinion through studying the films for many years. It’s all widely available on YouTube. I sense you are relying on second hand information to base your opinions.. These guys were masterful boxer-punchers. Very experienced guys who countered the hell out of Marciano. I wouldn’t say they were primarily any one thing past being really good counter punchers. They did what was necessary in any situation. Charles fought Joe Louis differently to how he fought Rocky. And Walcott, a very slick spoiler mostly decided to war with Rocky head on. So I don’t think categorising these guys into a set outboxer style can be a solution.
Liston is all wrong for Marciano. Liston's telephone pole jab in that face first style. Marciano ain't fighting off the back foot , so coming at Liston . Lights out. Just a Horrible styles matchup
Nothing to figure out. Lots of guys make it past 34 and don't quit. It is a complete non sequitur post.
C'mon man. You are using the 34 year old version of Liston vs the Marciano who threw 100 punches in round 15. But the problem is that Marciano threw zero punches at age 34... so be fair … I'm not saying you in particular, but who has a problem with Prime Liston in 59 and 60?? … You always here about Liston being picked apart at age 34 and 35 against Ali? Well that age is past Prime for 90 percent of the boxing world …… so be original. that is all I ask? The quit thing at age 34 aginst Ali is so overblown because no one really can pick apart Liston's game in Prime. That is why you always hear about the quit thing because Liston cleaned out the division, looks great on film, and was denied his tittle shot for some time
My point was that Liston quit in fights, and that is not an age specific thing. Your objections are nonsense and phrases like "be original" are not impressive or relevant. If you disagree, then vote differently. There is nothing wrong with what I said and just because Liston quit when he was 34 is not a point.
Duran quit , Frazier quit, Pep quit, Klitch quit … the list goes on and on and on … yes the point is be original....
I think both Tyson & Foreman get him out in under 3 and could well be quicker given Tysons handspeed. Liston just busts him up something terrible and the Pope holds a public mass and declares a day of mourning. Hairdressers across the Western World no longer service Afro hair in protest.
No, you are talking to yourself. Nothing I have said is wrong. I am not going to withdraw a point because you don't consider it "original." That is stupid. Grow up.
Ok , I am all grown up now thanks. Your point that Liston " quit " against Ali is any indication of a Prime Liston vs Rock is ludicrous. And used weak to think that has anything to do with this matchup prime for prime. You are years after Listons Prime … so try again Liston 59 60 ???
IT IS NOT AN ARGUMENT ABOUT PRIMES. It is an argument about character. Dude, vote your own way and get lost.
Ok great thanks. You are a good teacher .. Now I know all my arguments why Duran loses every fantasy matchup. Because he quit. Now I just got laughed off this board because of you … thanks again .. Ok , Ill get lost now
