Just watching GGG Cinnamon II

Exactly. Clenelo got points for just moving forward. GGG beat Clenelo going forward and then he beat him going backward.

 

I don't plan on rewatching it any time soon, but for anyone interested (if they exist?) here was my card last time I watched it.

Some context would be that I scored it 7-5 Nelo on fight night, 7-5 GGG the next morning then this around a year after that. I haven't watched it since.

His fans only gave him rounds because Canelo was moving forward and GGG was on the backfoot, but Canelo was ineffective. He throws the occasional explosive shot to wow the the fans, but many of them didn't land. The whole fight was about a narrative, not actual scoring.

GGG was the one guy landing consistently all night, even if it was mostly the jab and we all know GGG has a strong jab. Canelo got outboxed and outlanded in the 2nd fight. All this fans have is to point to the official robbery scorecards.

 

Canelo was the far more effective puncher in the rematch. According to Compubox, Canelo landed at a much higher percentage, landed a lot more power punches and landed a lot more body shots. Yes GGG out jabbed him but that was all GGG could do, which was land light, ineffective jabs that didn't deter Canelo in the slightest. Then GGG would back away, get out of range move laterally, rinse and repeat. GGG finally landed a big shot in the 10th round but before that Canelo was the only one landing big eye catching shots.

Now granted the fight was definitely about a narrative : but who's fault was that for making it a narrative? It was GGG's fault for making the rematch about a narrative, as he was the one who complained that Canelo didn't fight Mexican Style the first time.

So GGG is the one to blame for the rematch turning into a narrative about Mexican Style. HBO ran with that narrative for sure, the narrative that GGG created, then failed to deliver by not fighting the way he wanted Canelo to fight. GGG has no one but himself to blame for demanding a toe to toe Mexican war then fighting like a scaredy cat all night.

 

Agreed. Canelo obliged them and gave them the requested Mexican style which Lil G did not enjoy. I scored the fight 9-3 in Canelo’s favour.

 

For every power shot Canelo landed, GGG would land rougly ten jabs. Then at that point only one fighter is outscoring the other, and thats GGG. Canelo coming forward made it easier for GGG to land consistently. Hell, he even hurt Canelo in the 10th round and never got hurt himself. The narrative you mentioned has nothing to do with scoring the fight.

 

That's something I've noticed about this bout, those who score for Canelo do so because of the narrative like they're scoring the entire event from negotiations and drama till the last bell. Those who score for GGG score the fight on it's own.

 

That's quite an exaggeration. GGG was throwing mainly jabs while Canelo was loading up with power shots. GGG was being extremely cautious and was unwilling to stay in the pocket to follow those jabs up with big right hands. When one guy is landing regularly with power shots and body shots while the other guy is throwing light jabs and backing away it's a stretch to not score the round to the guy who's landing bombs consistently round after round.

Landing a big power shot is a more significant punch than loads of ineffective jabs. Canelo slipped many of them even while staying in the pocket. The ones that GGG landed didn't deter Canelo. Judges notice that. Canelo might eat a jab to get into range to land a big shot. GGG was getting tagged and busted up. GGG doesn't use upper body movement so the shots landed, he wasn't elusive enough to avoid Canelo's Mexican Style attack. He blocked some though and fought well. I personally thought GGG came closer to winning the rematch than he did the first match, but to score it for GGG you'd have to give him rounds where he was eating big shots by Canelo when he wasn't scoring power punches himself.

I had it 7 rounds to 5 Canelo. To say that everyone who scored it for Canelo just did so due to the narrative is quite a generalization. Some casual may have been influenced by the narrative but no Canelo definitely landed the harder more impressive more impactful power punches round after round. Scoring round after round for a light jabber who's backing away against a fighter who is pressing the action with a constant power punching work rate is difficult to do.

Now granted there were rounds that GGG won. Rounds 1 and 4 for example, those were GGG rounds. But to give GGG other rounds when Canelo is landing power punches and GGG isn't is wrong. For you to win a round by jabbing you have to avoid being hit with big shots. GGG couldn't do that and that's why he lost. Canelo's consistent power punching won him that match, not due to the narrative but due to the punches that actually landed. The narrative did appear to play a role though, whether consciously or unconsciously but the narrative didn't turn GGG's face into a busted up tomato. Canelo's punches did that. The narrative didn't cause GGG's trainer to tell GGG that Canelo was winning after the 7th round. Canelo's consistent barrage of punches did that.

You are using the narrative as an excuse to deny the beating that GGG suffered at the hands of Canelo. GGG did box well but not well enough to win. He didn't slip enough of those big punches for his jabs to make the difference. He didn't use the jab to set up enough big right hands to offset the big right hands that Canelo was landing.

 

for what its worth, have a friend of mine, name is paul nave who was a pro boxer, fought greg haugen three times. asked him about both fights. he gave both to ggg, but close.

 

Compubox sucks most of the time. If you really want to analyze it, watch these videos.

They're much more accurate than Compubox and they show how effective each fighter is. GGG landed more punches and landed more effective punches. He won that fight clearly.

GGG came forward for 12 rounds and outboxed Clenelo in the first fight and they robbed him. GGG then decided to outbox Clenelo going backwards, and still got robbed.

 

The only victory I can give to Clenelo is that he took GGG's prime w/ all the roided concrete slabs that he hit him with. Even then GGG beat that ass and even thenFather Time was an equal contributor to his decline.

 

Just watched the first fight.
GGG won comfortably.
