He was a really good fighter. The DC area had some really good guys around that time period. Guys that were not necessarily huge stars but boxing folks sure new them. Mitchell, Keith Holmes and Travis Simms were tricky southpaws that came out if that area and guys that people WERE NOT lining up to fight. I remember going into his rematch with Koysta he was seen as a very live underdog because he was coming off impressive wins against the top guys at 140 and he looked good doing it. I'm pretty sure he had a lot of injury issues that cut his career short if I remember correctly.
He hurt his knee in the first Tszyu fight I don't think he was ever the same after that. Good fighter but lacked the punch and a bit chinny. I know he was trying to get a fight with Gatti in 07 nothing came of it.
He was a solid contender. The Kostya Tszyu fight separated him from the elite fighters. Tszyu was at his best in that fight and Sharmba had the style to beat Tszyu but lost his discipline in the fight once he got tagged. I might rank him somewhere around the Corey Spinks level, maybe a hair beneath.
He was a good, but not elite fighter. He had fast, but not blazing hands. He was decently slick, but not all that hard to hit. He wasn't feather-fisted, but not a big puncher either. There was always talks of a matchup between he and Judah. I was always confident Zab would have kicked his ass.
Definitely below Spinks. Corey accomplished more, and beat better fighters. Corey was also a lot tougher.
I am inclined to agree with you. I thought I was giving Sharmba a bit too much credit but I could not think of anyone else at the moment. Also, I am from DC and Sharmba seemed like a good dude. Thanks for the correction.
I wonder if Mitchell didn't hurt his knee would he gone on beat Tszyu that night? When the second fight rolled around Mitchell didn't have the speed to avoid Tszyu's punches.
Even though he lost to floyd I remember manny steward saying he thought a fight between floyd and sharmba was a toss up fight. that was before mitchell was stopped by tszyu and seemed to go downhill after that. It at least tells you how highly regarded he was as a fighter.
Basically a lower level alphabet holder. I don’t remember him beating anyone good. He was like the missing link between Camacho Jr. And Camacho Sr. Similar to Corley.
I forgot they fought twice. I don’t think I have ever seen the first fight but I remember the conversation about Mitchell looked good in the first fight and perhaps he was actually at Tszyu’s level or even better. Thanks for bringing that up.
Very well guided after early career stoppage losses to Stevie Johnston and Lavander Johnson. B fighter overall. Kind of a poor mans Camacho. Not resilent enough against A level competition. Tzyu is lauded for beating him twice but his lack of resiliencecy was exposed years beforere their first fight.
Mitchell was much better then Corey. Take another look at the resumes. When he was young he was blindingly fast and very slick.
