Let’s create the perfect fight ... round by round

Pat, don't wish to see this subject matter disappear as it is very thought-provoking. I've been thinking a bit on this and have a few more for your list.

Round 2: The second bout between Edwin Rosario v Frankie Randall - both men tasting canvas
Round 4: Vito Antuofermo v Cyclone Hart - always remember this one but the film is a bit grainy. Still, you can see what happens.
Round 6: Mike Rossman v Mike Quarry III - always partial to this for the clean punches thrown for 3 minutes
Round 8: Saad Muhammad v Yaqui Lopez I - can you believe it? You were looking for another good 8th round as competition to their second fight and the exact same thing happened in their first fight.
Round 14: the 14th round is still a bit of a problem, but there was a damn good 14th round in the Barry McGuigan v Stevie Cruz bout.

 

Dude, I actually logged back on because I forgot to add the Holmes - Weaver 11th. We're on the same page, dude.

 

I just went back to Cornelius Boza-Edwards v Rafael Limon to check my memory of the 14th and 15th rounds of those fights and compare them with the same rounds in Chacon-Limon 4.

Round 14

Boza v Limon:
Starts with an immediate triple uppercut from Limon and Boza returns fire but then Boza starts putting in some Ali-like footwork and mugging for Limon. Sporadic bursts of action till the bell.

Chacon v Limon:
Both fighters start swinging from the get go and Chacon lands several right hands that rock Limon to his core. There's a moment when Limon has his hands raised as if to say 'I'm still here!' but then reaches out almost in a hugging motion to Chacon as Bobby wallops him with another hard right to the face. Chacon has Limon is serious trouble for much of the round although Limon still finds a way to fire back. Incredible round.

Winner: Chacon-Limon (clear)

Round 15

Boza v Limon:
Non stop action for most of the round as they punch each other to a standstill with about 30 seconds to go. The last half a minute they spend taunting each other before they break the ceasefire at the very end of the round.

Chacon v Limon:
Bobby controls the round moving in and out of range now that he feels he has the fight in the bag after that devastating assault on Limon in the previous round. With 20 seconds to go, he lands a series of shots that first rocks Limon, then staggers him backwards and then finally drops him. Limon makes it to his feet and steadies himself just enough to hear the final bell.

Winner: Boza-Limon (close. The first 2 and a half minutes of Boza-Limon were action packed non-stop punching from both men. The real drama of Chacon-Limon round 15 came in the last 20-25 seconds)

 

Scar, it's just amazing that the exact same round of the two fights between Saad and Lopez would play out in the exact same way and be the best round of both fights too. I think the second fight round 8 is slightly better but the first one is still unbelievable. Going to go back and watch them again and compare.

 

Round 8 comparison (in five acts): Franklin/Lopez 1 v Saad/Lopez 2

Franklin v Lopez 1
Act 1 (0.00 - 0.50 seconds) Both fighters start circling throwing jabs with Franklin landing some harder jabs and throwing in straight rights and left hooks
Act 2 (0.50 - 1.40) Lopez suddenly stuns Franklin, backing him to the corner post and firing off combo after combo, teeing off on him as he moves from the corner onto the ropes and fires off more
Act 3 (1.40 - 2.10) Somehow Franklin weathers the storm and now has Lopez backing up and against the corner post shipping punches!
Act 4 (2.10 - 2.30) Franklin has punched himself out and Lopez backs him to the ropes for another assault, although Lopez is just as tired now.
Act 5 (2.30 - 3.00) The two fighters trade evenly till the bell.

Saad v Lopez 2
Act 1 (0.00 - 0.30) Both fighters come out throwing jabs before Saad backs Lopez to the ropes and starts unloading combos. Lopez fires back and moves away from the ropes.
Act 2 (0.30 - 1.00) The two fighters move to ring centre and start to trade
Act 3 (1.00 - 1.30) Saad backs Lopez to the ropes again and unleashes hard shots although Lopez manages to fire back and begins to turn the tide
Act 4 (1.30 - 2.00) Lopez spins Saad round and puts him against the ropes, unleashing dozens of punches against a prone Saad and rocking his head back before punching himself out
Act 5 (2.00 - 3.00) Saad gets a second wind and turns Lopez round, pinning him to the ropes and throwing volleys of punches before following him around the ring and backing Lopez up repeatedly, not letting him escape. But at the bell, Lopez is beginning to fire back again.

A draw! Just two of the greatest rounds you'll ever see.

 

Another round 4: Chang v Tokashiki - 3 minutes of insanity.

 

Another round 13: Pryor v Arguello 1 - Arguello hits Pryor with massive right hands and Pryor shakes them off to fight back.

 

Another round 5: Israel Vasquez v Rafael Marquez 2 - Vasquez puts Marquez down and then Marquez battles back.

 

Jel, I know what you mean about the chances of something like this happening in the same round of both fights have to be way out there. Great breakdown on the rounds, my man.

 

Pat, I have a few more for you. For the 13th round there are two more fights I checked out that produced an exemplary round. They are the Jeff Chandler v Gaby Canizales fight and the Larry Holmes v Ken Norton squabble. Also, not to be a glutton, the now legendary Ramos v Ramos fight between Mando and Sugar produced 4 separate rounds that I found to be nomination worthy. And they are rounds 2, 3, 7 & 9. It was that kind of a fight.

On another note, there was a fight I watched about a year ago on youtube between Curtis Parker and an undefeated prospect named Philip Morefield from many years back. And their 1st round ticked the boxes for me on what an exceptional round should be. There were at least a dozen moments in that first round where I audibly yelled, "Ooooooh!" That's how hard they went at it. Man, when I have that reaction I'm looking at something real. Unfortunately for this exercise, the video is no longer out there.
