I think he was already a little past it when he beat Wlad I agree that his wins outside of that aren't very impressive but that is because he didn't have a chance to fight the likes of Tua, Ike, Morrison, Mercer, etc etc.
What’s his second-best win? And third? His entire resume is he upset Wlad (props for that) and he gave a few guys good fights. He also gassed out pretty often didn’t he? And he got knocked the blank out by Nate freaking Tubbs. He was a one-hit wonder. Bananarama had two hits lol.
And it was some trick of fate that kept him away from top contenders? I’m sure they were scared to death lol. He was very, very carefully handled because he had a suspect chin. Hence all the blown-up cruiserweights and lollipop-punching journeymen. Stayed busy up through about 1996 and after that it’s one or two fights a year. He didn’t like to train was his rep. And so he just treaded water rather than dedicating himself (to boxing rather than golf) and they finally took a shot. Rahman had gone 3-2 in his last five before chopping down Sanders. He wasn’t regarded as a monster at the time. And let’s not forget Nate Tubbs. Wonder why they didn’t bring him back for an immediate rematch?
Don’t be ridiculous. Rahman was at his peak and knocked out Lennox Lewis within a year. Sanders’ poor management and less than 100% commitment to boxing are well documented. It wasn’t that he was protected. As for Tubbs, plenty of heavyweight prospects have been knocked out by someone on the way up who they were supposed to beat. Wlad included.
How many of them were knocked out by fighters who had two other wins over opponents with winning records (including a 1-0 guy in their debut) in their entire careers? Those promoters invested a good bit bringing in overweight cruisers with name recognition and journeymen from halfway around the world to beef up his record. All they had to do was put out a few calls and say ‘Our guy Corrie is ready to take on top opposition, make us an offer’ and he could have landed some fights against top guys. Rahman had lost 2 of his last 5 before Sanders. He wasn’t some dangerous guy who people thought was ever going to win a title. He was, to top fighters, an opponent. He had his 15 minutes of fame when he caught Lennox, just as Sanders did when he caught Wlad, but that was it for both of them ... although Rahman fought top opposition and lost his share but had at least a few decent wins on his resume. Corrie had power. He caught lightning in a bottle one time. Everything else about his career is pedestrian. For the third time, what is Corrie’s second-best win?
Well Larry Donald and Chris Byrd fought both of them. Probably some others too. Puritty and Billups lost 42 fights between them 20 or more each. They were hardly avoided — their list of losses is a who’s who of their heavyweight era for the most part, with a few fellow journeymen also beating each. If you met their price, they’d fight you anywhere any time. Corrie didn’t have a lot of trouble getting fights. He had a lot of trouble training for fights so he stayed in active. The mouth around this guy is ridiculous.
Nate Tubbs was a know sparring partner who didn’t take his pro career seriously. Notice the last name? Sanders’ second best win imo is Purrity, who had just beaten Hipp and Jorge Luis Gonzalez and was something like 16-2-1 in his last nineteen fights, only losing to Rahman and Grant and drawing with Morrison. He soon would beat Wlad.
Yeah Robbie Sims and Roger Leonard both had brothers too, and theirs did a far sight more than Nate’s did. And both accomplished a lot more than Nate. So wtf does that have to do with anything? Nate Tubbs is exactly what his record says he was. And Sanders lost to him, which isn’t even the same as losing to his underachieving brother.
I find it interesting that you have 11k posts on a boxing message board and don’t seem to know that good heavyweights often have one or two ko loses to inferior opponents due to getting hit with a big shot. It’s almost as if YDSAB, correct me if I’m wrong. Nate Tubbs was Tyson’s sparring partner. That’s what his pro career was: https://www.pressreader.com/uk/boxing-news/20181115/281526522085439
Sanders had exceptional hand speed and power. Was big and left handed. Not too many fighters with good management want their man in against that type of risk. Lewis never even fought a lefty and he fought in the era with Byrd, Moorer and Sanders. Sanders resume is awfully light on wins. So a case can be made that he is overrated. But it's more than just the Wlad KO on why most myself included feel with proper dedication and a good trainer he could of been special. He iced Wlad, Gave Vitali Hell had him hurt more than Lewis did and he was literally one punch away from taking out Rahman. On the flip side he led with his chin and was very straight up and open as the day is long for counters. It's what saved Rahman, any half way decent finisher puts Rahman away in that bout instead Sanders just marched face first into a hail mary counter. He also had poor stamina. So as he was - he was an athletic but flawed fighter. I believe with a proper trainer and proper dedication he could of been a top 5 heavy of the second half of the 90s. Much better than Briggs, Grant, Golota, Ancient Foreman, etc. Also while he did fight blown up cruisers - he did what he was supposed to do by taking them out quick. I seen Wilder gift wrapped a bunch of supposed softies and struggle everytime. It was a major red flag that he was terribly overrated. Guys like szpilka were put in the ring with Wilder to have WIlder do what Sanders did against Cole and Czyz etc. Instead he would often lose many rounds and look bad doing so.
Says the guy with 12K posts lol? Lighten up, Francis. You probably missed it but I asked earlier: name me some heavyweights who were KTFO by opponents woh had exactly two wins over other fighters with winning records — one of which was a 1-0 guy in his debut (and the ferocious Sim Warrior ended up 4-12 in his career. (The other had lost 6 of his last 7 fights and went 1-10 to end his career during the stretch that Nate beat him.) Find me someone notable heavyweight not named Corrie Sanders who lost to someone with that kind of record. Show me how much you know about boxing by giving me those examples. So Nate was a sparring partner? Which means he took ass-kicking from Tyson for a living. And how much did that help him against opponents with winning records? None, unless their name was Corrie Sanders.
The other guy who was a career sparring partner for Tyson was named McCall. He's also known for a big upset knockout win. The boundaries have changed a whole lot in this convo but you're still jibbering and jabbering.
