Let’s create the perfect fight ... round by round

Just rewatched 6,7,8 and 9 of Corrales and Castillo. Round 10 naturally overshadows them because of the drama of the finish but these rounds that preceded it are just awesome.

I think 6, 8 and 9 are all worthy of inclusion.

 

If this exercise did nothing more than make you watch that fight, it has been worth it. Consider them added.

Round 10: Chavez v Taylor 1

 

A couple of rounds from the Bobby Chacon and Cornelius Boza-Edwards' wars:
Chacon-Boza 1: round 9
Chacon-Boza 2: round 2

 

I want all rounds that qualify that should be considered for BEST round (number whatever), but please take some caution not to just throw in a ton of honorable mentions. It’s a lot to keep up with and if you see rounds you absolutely know are better already nominated, use judgment.

Round 8: Alejandro Gonzalez v Kevin Kelley
Round 10: Marco Antonio Barrera v Kennedy McKinney
Round 10: Dick Tiger v Henry Hank

 

Sorry Pat - didn't mean to swamp you. Putting in ones that I think are genuine contenders for best round and if they were obviously inferior to the others, I wouldn't include them.

But will bear in mind for any further picks.

On that note I'm happy for you to remove Boza-Limon round 14 as I wasn't expecting that to be added - it's definitely not as good as Chacon-Limon round 14.

 

I’ll leave it because Round 14 (apart from Balboa-Creed I) is the Holy Grail of best rounds if we can find one. I came up with Schoolboy Chacon-Bazooka Limon and was pleased to find it after looking at a lot of ones I half-remembered being good that really weren’t great. I’ll keep adding, just don’t want a deluge of rounds nobody including the person who nominated them is going to vote for.

 

Oh, man, every memory has been firing today trying to think of some really good rounds. Sometimes its hard because I've watched a lot of great fights, but as a whole, only good rounds. So many of them just didn't pan out. I was especially annoyed at the 7th round of Curry v Norris, which was a great fight and the 7th had everything I was looking for except 3 times during the round there was an interruption for varying reasons which just took the edge off the round for me. I'm being too particular, but for this exercise I just don't want to throw anything out there. However, I did find some great candidates

Round 4: Jose Stable v Charley Scott - all I can say is 'wow'
Round 5: Carlos Ortiz v Battling Torres - 3 minutes of sustained action
Round 6: Sugar Ray Leonard v Tommy Hearns I - they were back and forth with this one
Round 7: Joey Giardello v Gil Turner - man, what these two were made of. I wish the film was better, though.

SRL-Hearns: the sixth is the round when Ray finally breaks through and rattles Tommy and lands that crippling body shot, right?

 

Yep, fair enough.

Honestly, after round 1 I think the voting is going to be a lot more evenly spread between the rounds. Hagler-Hearns is such an iconic first round that nothing else stood a chance (I voted for Pryor-Arguello). The only other one I think that is likely to dominate is Gatti-Ward 1 round 9, just because it is so etched in people's minds.

Also, I think there are going to be some rounds that people are going to be surprised by how good they are, like Chacon-Boza 1 round 9 - a great round in a good but not necessarily great fight. It may not win that round (because of the aforementioned Gatti-Ward) but it's worth 3 minutes of everyone's time even if it doesn't.

 

That's the one.

 

Simple solution - either follow the rules or have your opinions ignored and move on. That's it - no debate required.
