That's true. But I think it's Hearn's arrogance that puts people off him. Also, the relationship he's had with SKY in recent years have left the fans with some very unsatisfactory broadcasting standards. A fair bit of bias is to be expected but the bias coming out from SKY/Matchroom coverage has verged on the farcical at times.
The arrogance is part of the Schtick. As for that matter is the cheerleading and bias in the sky coverage. It's that uneasy point where boxing the sport meets show business. As hardcore fans we want objectivity, unbiased expert analysis, detailed technical breakdowns of fight strategy etc. Casual fans want to see 'our guy' leather 'their guy'. We all know, sadly, which model is going to deliver bigger audiences and advertising revenues. Ultimately we as a general public get the coverage we deserve.
I think Brook fighting Golovkin is more a case of bad luck for Brook than anything else. You'd expect him to lose of course but not necessarily get injured like he did in the process. In my opinion Brook was running out of time and options and this represented a big pay day he was happy to take after years of practically begging Khan to fight him. If your position is 'Frank cares too much about his fighters to put them into situations where they're expected to be treated like a hapless punchbag' I think it's fair to say that all available evidence suggests you are wrong.
Golovkin-Brook should not have been sanctioned in the first place. The BBBC, the WBC and the IBF are responsible. Can't really blame Brook for taking the money he was offered, or Hearn for promoting a lucrative international fight. The so-called governing bodies are the ones who should take a stand against mismatches like that.
Why do you think it should not have been sanctioned? Moving up in weight? It happens. Perhaps not to the extent that you regularly see someone jump a division but there is precedent for this. Remember, it doesn't take too many steps (Valuev fought Ruiz fought Jones fought Hopkins fought De La Hoya fought Pacquaio) to go from the biggest heavyweight champion ever to a guy who fought in the lowest weight class.) An undefeated welterweight fighting an undefeated middleweight isn't beyond the realms of fantasy. A mismatch? Now we're into dodgy territory. If you want to see GGG Brook called off because it's a mismatch then what about Golovkin against Wade? Or Murray? Or Monroe? Now I quite like looking at what odds the bookies have for fights, and in all of those, Golovkin was a bigger favourite than he was against Brook.
More bad luck than terrible promoting? Getting one of the stars of your stable bumped off by a much bigger man was idiotic. At least Eddie made a few quid out of it.
Brook getting injured like he did was more bad luck than anything else. Brook was hanging around, not doing that much and waiting for a Khan fight that Khan wasn't fancying. I think it more poorer promotion not trying to force more an issue in the Bizier / Dan / Gavin days than it was putting Brook in with Golovkin.
A welterweight shouldn't be allowed to fight a legitimate middleweight world champion unless he's done something at middleweight to earn the shot or at least prove himself against a solid fighter there. It's a mismatch until proven otherwise. I'm quite aware that there are middleweights who would be given even less chance and do less well (and in some instances they shouldn't be sanctioned either), and that sometimes the welterweight can pull of the upset ....... but that's besides the point because they are good reasons to require the smaller man to at least beat someone half-decent at the higher weight before stepping in with the #1 man there. It's not as if Golovkin was just some fake champion. He was clearly a dominant and legitimate 160 pound champion. Yes, it happens. Golovkin-Brook is not unique. Other fights shouldn't have been sanctioned either.
The Whyte/Povetkin fight would be PPV unsurprisingly according to various sources. The Russian will be asking for crazy money therefore to box in Hearn’s garden- if he and his team were allowed into the country to fight.
This is so true. Boxing is a sport people most people dip into every now and then there's no crazy demand for it that we have to resort to this. Absolutely no one is sitting at home right now thinking f****** hell I'm desperate to see Dillian Whyte fight.
I suppose if there were some stipulation whereby you couldn't move through the weight classes like that then your argument stacks up, but saying it should have not been allowed to happen because it's a mismatch fails really to satisfactorily answer why so many even greater mismatches happen every week (outside of the time being of course.) For example, I think the weight class argument is a little overstated. I can think of many fights between people of the same weight class that would be far more concerning than an unbeaten, elite welter taking on an unbeaten, elite middleweight.
If he actually gets a few weekly cards going that aren't absolutely abysmal with Whyte-Povetkin at the end of it, then fair ****s. That would be pretty good. I'd even say given the current state of play that PPV would be justified as well. URGH
Yeah, bad luck. Definitely nothing to do with fighting a much bigger man who also happens to be a huge puncher.
