Iron Mike Tyson vs Gentleman Gerry Cooney, Prime For Prime.

He never did. BUT , every fight he had that he lost he was on the downside of his career. Prior too the Douglas fight he seemed to be declining.
Your absolutely right in saying he never got up to win a fight. But you had to get him down 1st. And in his prime , only a very select few would've been able to accomplish that.

 

He's a lot more proven that Cooney.

My only concern would be that you don't trade hooks with a hooker. Not only would Tyson be exchanging hooks with a guy regarded as a top 10 hitter in terms of raw power, his rapid head movement would be building up momentum and further increasing the power of a counter. I don't see this as a "likely" scenario, but if it does happen Tyson would be in serious trouble. But i would expect that his team would anticipate this and find a game plan to neutralize Cooney. A tight guard while attacking the body and focusing more on uppercuts and rights would be my approach since Cooney is so tall and has a big head.

8 times out of 10, Tyson stops Cooney within 6 rounds with moderate difficulty. He has too many options against a guy who lacks defense and durability. Cooney lacks the skill to outbox him and lacks the toughness and 2 handed power need to outslug him.

 

i was going to play Devil’s advocate to my earlier post on Tyson winning and this would of been my reply. Cooney had massive power In his left hook the type of power that can paralyze a fighter in the ring, just look at his bouts with Eddie Gregg and Lyle, Cooney hits them and their legs become rooted to the ground. They can’t move as if stuck in cement, that type of power is rare, an attacking fighter like Tyson would end up in Cooney’s wheelhouse for sure and his head momentum could lead to a flush bomb landing, but I saw Tyson weather a bomb From Ruddock in the opening round that landed flush (Cooney imo was bigger puncher than Ruddock but at least comparable) I think Tyson could weather it and eventually get Gerry out of there. But if Gerry landed he was a pretty good finisher and would be throwing a lot of hooks to get Tyson out of there.
I just don’t think Gerry was durable enough for Mike who had good great chin.

 

I don't even think it goes 4 rounds. Bad fight for Gerry. Actually most top rated guys were a bad fight for Gerry.

 

I don't think there's ever been a heavyweight that could knock Tyson out without giving him a beating first, his chin took bombs off Ruddock an came back instantly

Foreman said Cooney was a brutal puncher, harder than Joe Frazier. Cooney would have one chance, to nail Tyson coming in and drop him . A hurt Tyson would be all target . But it's at best a 1 -10 shot. There's a 80 percent chance this fight ends in round 1

Prime Mike is too quick, hard hitting and aggressive for Gerry. Speed and power is with Tyson and Cooney was slower. Gerry might catch Mike with the big left, but prime Mike will shake one or two punches off and go to the body and head. Being a smaller man helps Tyson here.
