Fighters who could have been great with better trainers early in their careers

I would say Razor like someone already did, however, Razor was very stuborn and its possible that no trainer would of had too much of a huge impact on him as his ego took control after he felt no man could survive his smash.

anyways, point being I think Razor could of been better if he had been more defensive as he was at the beginning of his career.

 

Maybe James Kirkland, but he was also a late starter.

 

James Degale, he had a lot of talent but his coach was a southern area level coach and he never improved since he tuned pro

 

We don't know much who trained who.

 

Joseph Parker.

 

Yes, hes's a terrific example, had a very good career but could have been a lot better. He was too loyal to McDonnell.

 

I wonder what Kelvin Seabrooks or Freddie Pendleton's careers would have looked like if they were hooked in with top level trainers (and management) early on.

Became champions, but could have been better or in the case of Fury better earlier on.
Groves, Fury.

Adam Booth is probably a bit of a fraud who lucked out getting talented fighters in Haye/Groves/Lee then became a brand. Booth also betrayed Groves, then Groves had big trainer trouble for Froch I/II and Jack fights. The Froch fights were devastating. He was trained by an amateur coach hippy weirdo for those fights.

Tyson Fury was largely trained by his ****** family elders and had a lot of instability too. He should have stuck with McCrack or someone like that. It's incredible he actually beat Wlad with the goon team he had, just shows his raw ability.

Hughie Fury would also be far better with a real trainer. It's amazing he went the distance with Pulev/Povetkin while being trained by a guy who after the Pulev fight declared that Hughie's style (the style he trained into him) was awful and ineffective at elite level ...

 

Danny Garcia looks downright unrefined at times yet has a few very good wins. Also has good showings in his losses against top fighters. I really wonder what he would look like today had he gotten a quality trainer to further refine him.

I have read articles regarding others having trained him during his amateur days. Still, I feel he is capable of more.

 

Wilder under Emmanuel Steward could’ve been something special.

 

I know he ended up being 'somewhat great' anyway, but with Lennox Lewis his career had kind of two phases, namely that of a physical phenomenon in the early to mid 90s and a technical [post Steward] phenomenon roughly mid 90s too early 00s.

He was probably at his best during the relatively brief intersection of those two periods, e.g. the next few fights after the McCall loss. Maybe a shame he didn't pair up with Manny that bit sooner - could maybe have been a top tier/nailed on, rather than only credible, GOAT title contender.

 

Beat me to it. Imagine Corrie Sanders with proper match-making, psychological direction, training, nutrition from early on in his career. Guy could have been something special.

 

That era at heavyweight was week because of the lack of good trainers, however Tubbs and Ruddock turned pro years apart, so that could count as two eras, Tubbs faed a prime Tyson trained by Rooney, that`s the kind of trainer Tubbs and Ruddock needed, Ruddock reportedly didn`t even really train for his bout v Lewis other than a few open training sessions with him throwing the smash at the heavybag with some stupid bodyguards standing around.
