I favour Jones, Ward, Toney and many guys who have fought in the weight range but aren't traditionally classed as SMW fighters.

Toney I favour but as I said, Toney showing open lethargic and losing on point wouldn't surprise me at all.

He was great in those fights.

He was also great against Tim Littles.

I’ve been a member on here for a long time now and that seems to be an overlooked performance.

Tim Littles was a good fighter.

Personally, I’d pick the versions of James who fought Mike McCallum twice at MW as the best versions of him we ever saw.

He was a little bit lighter and a little bit sharper. He also had the better wins at the weight against Mike, Nunn and Reggie.

The only issue he had at MW, is that he sometimes struggled with guys like Williams and Tiberi, when he just went through the motions when he was fighting every month or so. He’d already fought 44 times before he fought Roy at 26. He had a tough schedule.

If a guy fights 7/8 official fights at the weight over a period of 2 years, he was officially a SMW fighter.

Roy Jones was a SMW for 2 years.

He won the IBF belt and then defended it.

Toney was the greater p4p fighter and easier on the eye, no doubt. Was he a better SMW? Not sure.

Froch could grind fighters down (Taylor and Groves), he could steamroll them (Bute) and he could outbox them (Abrams and Johnson). Not saying Toney couldn't win in different fashions also, but I think Froch's versatility gets overlooked. He was a winner, through and through.

Toney was more talented, but Froch never left the ring not having done his best in there. That's not a characteristic that should be underestimated, even though it often is.

I wasn't talking about a match-up between them, I was just talking about Froch's qualities in general.

Froch does not have the hand or foot speed to beat Toney. It is not like James would steam roll him but it is hard for me to imagine Froch beating him as you seem to suggest. Toney is just the better boxer with the superior hand speed

Who did he lose to at mw or lhw that he should have seen as a legit threat?
