Yeah I agree with basically everyone else. He's top 5 in resume, h2h a bit lower.

Nice talk though. I'm sure we both wish going back Toney would have shown dedicated professionalism throughout his full career.

I'm still not having that Montell Griffin was a superior LHW to Toney. Even if he is 2-0 against him.

No way. Toney was robbed both times imo. Griffin was damn good in his own right tho. Thanks for the chat pal

Most thought Toney deserved the decision twice. Griffin was lucky, there is really not much more to it.

I think Froch and his resume are overrated.

There is also the very little he achieved whilst there.

You don't subscribe to the thinking that he was in poor shape against Jones?

I'd say so. Eubank and Benn were big names, but on the slide. Taylor, Abrams, Bute, Groves, Kessler, Johnson should outweigh them resume wise.

His fights with Maske and Roy Jones fell through after the Griffin losses. He fought for the WBU which was an ill advised move as it kept him out of the ranking of the major bodies. The WBU never became a major body. Not a well managed fighter at this time in his career.

That's the point. My gut tells me he's one of the best fighters to appear in the division, but he did so little there, briefly breaking the top 5 rankings, that I can't consider him a great LHW at any point in his tenure there.

I agree. To this day, James claim to have been light heavyweight champ is ridiculous. The WBU never made although it appeared to have a shot in the 90s.

Yes, he could have been much more in that division. In my opinion, Toney at light heavyweight was not much different than in other weight classes. He had a few close calls which did not went his way and derailed his career.
