Leon Spinks, favourite fights??

I forgot about him but then again, he won an alphabet title against John Ruiz. Spinks beat THE heavyweight champion of the world for the leniel belt.

 

Mercado. He really proved that he was more than just a guy who caught lighting in a bottle. Too bad he couldn't stay dedicated.

 

Well I think Georgie boy has his next homework assignment: how’s about you do Ali-Spinks I and II for the ‘what fights did you watch/score’ stickied thread?

 

Did Ali-Spinks I, don't like the sound of II.

 

I know Michael was 212 for Tyson but against Holmes I’m pretty sure he was 200 for fight #1 and 205 for fight #2.

 

I had totally forgotten that he had bolted from Ali’s corner because Ali wouldn’t retire, at least that Was the story. He wanted him to retire after the shavers fight. Now you guys have gotten me wanting to watch the Ali - Leon Spinks fights I probably will tonight after my wife and daughter go to bed.


Also you mentioned living close I believe to Leon. I’m only 100 miles south of STL in a town called Cape Girardeau so I grew up obsessed with the Spinks brothers as well.

 

Is Leon’s fight with Mercado on YouTube ? I heard that was a decent one but I’ve never seen it

 

It is. It's a good one. Mercardo had some crazy power and was seen as a threat to Holmes after knocking out Berbick and Shavers. Leon was still in rebuild mode after losing to Ali and Coetzee.

 

It was The first one that came to my mind, a very good win for Leon. Mercado was no joke knocking out Trevor Berbick in one round he also beat Ernie shavers, it’s a big win for Leon. And a fun scrap.

 

Yeah it was pretty much his last hurrah at Heavyweight. He lost to Holmea the very next fight and it was all downhill from there.

 

never seen much of Mercado but I guess he was a big guy with a big punch. I should watch that Spinks vs Mercado match

 

Pretty good slugfest — outside of Ali I, I’d rate this as Spinks’ best performance.
