    No he isn't.

From a technical standpoint, Sharkey was as good as almost heavyweight has ever been.

I suspect that Patterson might have been all wrong for him, but that is another matter.

I agree. Sharkey I would rate as high or higher than Floyd in an all-time list and I'm a bigger fan of both than most. However I see Patterson's speed and leapng attacks giving Jack fits. Now Quarry and Jack, that would be some fight!

I think Floyd takes him out later, 13th or 14th round of a very good tussle

LOL, good one, Sharkey was sloppy and limited

    What do we see?

    Head down
    No guard
    Flat footed and plodding
Rarely uses a jab (and when he did against Schmelling it was lazy)
Mainly throws single short hooks to the body while laying on his opponent
    Doesn't throw combinations

    Compare that to Patterson's:

    Double and trebble jabs
Combination punching to the body and head
    High Guard
    Head Movement
Use of feints to set up punches
    Intricate footwork
    Use of the ring
    Use of angles.

It's a night and day comparison in skillset

That aside I believe Sharkey gets overrated based on a gift decision

I dont see anything between them as regards boxing ability.Patterson has the definite handspeed edge but he had that over all his opponents, imo. Both on top of their games it's a toss up.

    I don't get it.
Low guard is not a "no guard".
    Not true:

He had heavy jab and he relied on it often, what fights have you seen?
    Again, it's not true.
Watch his triple hook combination on Scott.

Pretty much everything that you have written here is factually untrue.

Sharkey was a better technician than Patterson.

He did not have Patterson's natural athleticism, but he was a much more versatile fighter.

It would be easier to pick somebody who Patterson couldn't beat, than it would to pick somebody that Sharkey couldn't beat.

He's much stronger and bigger though.

Sharkey was extremely athletic fighter. He looks like a different man in the Schmeling rematch. Judging by his post Schmeling 2 career he seems to have become a shot fighter with a rapid decline. However he still slides and pivots pretty well against Joe Louis in his final fight. Styles make fights and I do believe Patterson's left hook would nail Sharkey eventually but in terms of rating the men all time I have 0 issue with putting Sharkey over Patterson. Not much separates the two men. Sharkey schooled most of the big fighters of his day, and looked really good against Loughran and early in the first Schmeling fight before the bad foul.

To be honest, I do think that Jack would have lasted longer against Sonny Liston. How much longer, I don't know.

I think that his defensive style could have frustrated Liston for a while.
