Sharkey has a solid resume, but are you sure Loughran was ranked either time they met?
I think Risko and Wienert were only ranked once each when Sharkey met them?
I don' think Johnson was ranked.

I don't hate Carnera I just don't think he was as good as you and Janitor among others, make him out to be.
I don't think he beats Briggs and I'm not going to say he does just to placate Carnera fans.
Its obvious you don't like being questioned and often ignore replies you don't like.

This is list of all fighters Sharkey met that were ranked, so they weren't necessarily ranked at the time when Jack faced them.

I don't view Carnera like Janitor does, he's higher on Primo than I am. I just don't like how everyone laugh at him when in reality he was decent contender, flawed but good fighter.
You're free to do that, but you don't need to try to make Carnera look as bad as possible. I'm not Primo fan by the way, I just want to be fair for him.
Really? I don't remember ignoring replies unless I don't have time to reply. There are other things to do in life as you likely know ;)

Whilst it does not explicitly say they were ranked when he fought them, that is the inference one would obviously take from your post isn't it.
As it doesn't mean what it implies ,its about as meaningful as say Bill Lang stopping Bob Fitzsimmons, imo.

I don't laugh at Carnera, there is nothing to laugh about in his story, its a rather tragic one imo.He was a brave man used and abused by vultures, then callously discarded when he was of no further financial value.

Well, it's a good base and you can go deeper with that list. That said, I don't think any of these fights were against someone as past it as Fitzsimmons against Lang.

Maybe you don't but a lot of posters do. For all this terrible story, Primo did much better than anyone would expect. He was a real warrior and deserved respect he rarely gets here.

I haven’t suggested Sharkey has a bad record, have I? It is a good record, but Heavyweight history has a lot of good records, great wins and fine Championships to account for.

On your listing of Sharkey’s highlights/lowlights… I think Sharkey split a pair with Gorman. Wills was at the end of his career and barely active by the time Sharkey beat him.

How is Sharkey’s KO loss to Dempsey disputed? Sharkey in his own words, would later say, when asked if he was still bitter about it “Nah, [Dempsey] saw an opening and he took it.”

Sharkey beat an unranked Risko and lost to him when he was ranked.
Stribling, Delany and Loughran were far better LHWs than Heavyweights. Stribling did nothing to earn his ranking in the Heavyweight division. Loughran wasn’t ranked at the time Sharkey beat him - but was ranked when he returned the favor to Sharkey.

More important is that , if you think Schmeling deserved the win, in his and Sharkey’s rematch, then surely it questions the legitimacy of Sharkey’s Championship. I also note that you did not list his KO loss to Carnera in his first attempted defense, which has to be considered a bad loss, in what was, in all, a very disappointing Championship run.

Not beating Dempsey; failing to beat the ranked Risko; having to be gifted his Championship and then failing to defend it against Carnera (loss by devastating KO); followed by a collapse in Sharkey’s career, losing his next two, immediately after the Carnera loss, has to be counted in an overall assessment of his placement in history - and Sharkey does not get inside the top-30 of All Time, let alone the top-20, for my money.

    I don't think I did.

It might have; it might not have. But Briggs would have looked better than Carnera, either way.

When a boxer's history is closely tied with corruption this is certainly not a given.

Neither am I, but you certainly seem to have been harping on about it for the last couple of pages or so.

He deserves the truth, and to the best of my knowledge I have never deliberately misrepresented him.
Commenting on Schulberg's thinly veiled story about him he said ,"it is all true, but I wish he had come to me,I could have told him much more".

We were obviously watching the same fight. We just have different interpretations of the action and, to me, Carnera generally looked poor in his fights, anyway.

Yeah, Godfrey looked to be gassing and it looks to be a low blow (I didn't say there wasn't one), but the press lambasted Carnera's theatrics and most were reporting it as a fairly even about at the time of the DQ.

He'd have still most likely have achieved more than Carnera.

I'm done with this discussion, feel free to disagree. I don't think I'll convince you if you have such a different view of these things that you don't rank Sharkey inside top 30. Everyone can have different opinion after all ;) Cheers!

With that approach, we can add: Ossie Ocasio; Mike Weaver; Gary Mason and Tyrell Biggs to Lennox Lewis' list of ranked opposition.
