We move on to voting for the best Round 9 of all time (starting this a tad early with Round 8 voting winding down). You can check the results of Round 1-8 voting on the master thread and nominate Rounds 10-15 here: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/let’s-create-the-perfect-fight-round-by-round.648592/ Ground rules: This fight is going the distance, so each nominated round has to go the full three minutes — so something like the 12th round of Chavez-Taylor I is not eligible. All weight divisions are eligible. And in rounds where the participants faced each other more than once, please specific which fight. Gloved era only. And importantly, this should be about the best rounds not the most historically significant. Voting will be set to stay open for three days. Carlos Monzon vs Bad Bennie Briscoe, World Middleweight Title Fight, Nov 11 1972, Briscoe landed a very destructive right hand to the jaw of Monzon, staggering him. Carlos holds on to Bennie, looking up at the clock, then survives to continue the bout, cutting Bad Bennie above the eye and retaining his title by unanimous decision in Luna Park. It was an action packed round 9.
Round 9 This was insane. I thought rounds 7 and 8 raised the bar, but this was the best bunch of rounds so far. Just incredible action. I have this in 3 sections: rounds 7-9 were all excellent rounds by any standard, rounds 4-6 were tremendous and could have won other rounds so far in this series, but rounds 1-3 were just unbelievable. Very tough to pick a winner but I'm happy with my final choice (after a lot of deliberating). 9. Gomez-Pintor How is this bottom?! This has some cracking action but isn't quite as good as rounds 3 and 12 of the same fight (also in this series). 8. Zaragoza-Jacob Wild ending and some terrific exchanges. Another excellent Jacob round. 7. Chacon-Boza 1 The best round of their first fight. Chacon hurts Boza but after that Boza takes over although Bobby has his successes. 6. Corrales-Castillo 1 A couple of interruptions spoil the flow a bit in this one but some of the exchanges are plain brutal. A prelude to the epic 10th. 5. Salido-Lopez 2 Wow - I watched this fight not that long ago and enjoyed it but watching this round back I was amazed. Sustained slugging for 3 minutes. Awesome stuff. 4. Ramos-Ramos This one exploded after the inspection of Mando's cuts - more give and take madness from an outstanding fight. 3. Holmes-Witherspoon A great, great round where they both take turns in beating the crap out of each other. What's not to love? 2. Ward-Gatti 1 The most famous round 9 in boxing history? Probably. And with good reason. This so easily could have been number 1, except for... 1. Jofre-Medel 1 Astonishing action fought at a tremendous pace and at a higher skill level than Ward-Gatti. Tons of momentum swings and then Medel has Jofre in big trouble near the end of the round before Jofre lands a bomb that has Medel out on his feet. Just phenomenal stuff.
We seem to have certain 'mastheads' in this competition where we gravitate to certain rounds as the best ever. Such as round 1, round 4, round 9 and soon to come round 10 and 15. I too went with the 'mastheads' in 1 & 4, but in this round I had to buck the trend. I felt Jofre-Medel and Ramos-Ramos just edged Ward-Gatti. And in the end, Jofre-Medel got my vote for the precise, pinpoint bombs they threw for 3 minutes, which I thought was unbelievable. If we had hi-def video and audio on this one I think we'd all be stunned. As for every fight on here, let me just end this by saying, I felt this was the toughest round so far to pick out a top 3.
Been running this thing for like 6 weeks now. Practically begging for nominations from the start. There’s a link at the top where I am literally imploring you to go nominate any rounds 10-15 you think should be included.
I do apologize for any problems that I have caused, but the nominees did not appeal to me, I no longer will participate in these threads of this kind, again please accept my apologies.
This content is protected KD early, tons of punches eaten, but I'll be honest. It's a lot more one-sided than I remember, Ward beat the **** outta him, and Gatti had about 30 seconds of success. Good round, but not my favourite here. Surprisingly. This content is protected Good action, good infighting, both men hurt at one point or another. Spectacular finish. I'll be honest, I admired the skills here rather than the action, but the action was stellar. This content is protected Very good action here, Holmes showed his inner lion here. Spoon hit him, and Holmes took 5 seconds to clear his head and came right back. I thought there was some lulls and clinching, but it's a HW fight, so what do you expect? This content is protected Watched this the other day, absolute chaos. Very very fun round with some drama, tons of action and a very high skill-level. This content is protected Awesome action here. Both visibly stunned, and both landing lots. Another one where I really love watching their skill along with the action. This content is protected Ahhhh infighting. Tons of good action, if a little sloppy. This type of round is why I loveeeeeee Salido, and I guess Juanma is alright, too. This content is protected Organised Chaos. That might be the perfect way to sum up Zaragoza's career, actually. After a measured first minute, these two knuckled down and gave us about two minutes of vicious action. Awesome round. This content is protected Very good action, pales in comparison to the 10th of this fight, though. God, these rankings are hard. I don't want ANY to be last, but someone has to be... I thought #5 was a better batch, but this one was damn good too. Rankings as follows: #8. Corrales-Castillo I #7. Salido-Lopez II #6. Gomez-Pintor #5. Ramos-Ramos #4. Holmes-Witherspoon #3. Gatti-Ward I #2. Jacob-Zaragoza #1. Jofre-Medel I Awh, it's over? Ah well, back to Pernell Whitaker fights then...
Gatti-Ward Round 9 doesn’t appeal to you? Wow. I just don’t understand why you didn’t nominate the Briscoe round so it could be included.
Well. Well. WELL. I don't know what it is like to pick out a favorite child, but I hope it is less painful than picking my favorite from this batch. What I thought would be like round 8 - a slam dunk for Ward/Gatti and a fight for second place - instead became one of the most tightly contested brackets in the selection. All of these had their merits, but if I had to get a top 3: Ramos-Ramos: Every time these guys come up in these brackets they always place well, which shows you the quality of the fight. Hurt somewhat from the delay over the cuts, but that gave the fight some extra urgency. Gatti-Ward I: Does this need justification? Just absolute insanity. But for me the surprise was... Jofre-Medel I: I mean what in the absolute hell. This was basically Gatti-Ward except for a higher level of skill and more back-and-forth action. This was stuff dream-rounds are made. As you can guess from the bolded text, this is what ultimately got my vote, surprising the hell out of me.
