Sonny Liston 1970s

I can't see Liston beating Frazier, either.

But there were a lot of guys who were top 10 Ring contenders in the early to mid 1970s who weren't exactly world-beaters - Floyd Patterspon, Henry Cooper, Ernie Terrell, Henry Clark, Chuck Wepner, Jose Urtain, Joe "King" Roman, Jose Luis Garcia, George Chuvalo, Jimmy Ellis, Randy Neumann, etc.

The Liston we saw against Wepner beats most of those guys. And he might beat a top five guy, like a Quarry, just because of styles and the fact that Quarry ate jabs.

There are some contenders who would defnitely be favored. And I'm sure some styles would give him hell, even someone like Bugner.

My point was Liston stopped guys who were still contenders in the early to mid 70s. And Liston would've remained a formidable contender early in the decade. Liston wasn't a pushover at any point in his career. In his last fight, he nearly beat Chuck Wepner to death. Wepner was a top 10 contender until 1976.

The fact that you give him chance or not could not be more irrelevant

 

Old Liston went 15-1 with 14 knockouts in the last six years of his career. And the guy who stopped him was a top 10 contender who was down on the cards and had been floored himself in the fight. (And "The Great" Quarry got stopped a week later by Chuvalo, I might add.)

There's nothing mediocre about a 50-4 record. Liston was still rated in the top 10 when he died.

You don't seem to know much about boxing. Leotis Martin was a top 10 heavyweight before he fought Liston.

And George Chuvalo lost to Ellis and Bonavena, too. Quarry was stopped by Chuvalo. Lost to Ellis. Probably would've lost to Bonavena, too, had he fought him instead of drawing with Tony Alongi a half-dozen times.

Against Liston's peers Machen, Patterson and Ali, Quarry floundered. But you think he beats Liston?

Liston would've tore Quarry's face off with the jab. Quarry ate so many punches, by the time he was 40, he didn't even remember he used to be a boxer. He literally couldn't slip a punch if his life depended on it. Ate everything.

Enough with Quarry. He was nothing special. Forever the bridesmaid, never the bride. Hell, Joe Alexander nearly put him away.

 

"Nearly" "liston would have" what if... He could.. He would.. Blahblah. Old Liston only fought tomato cans and he lost even against one of them by clean ko. Quarry always looked great against sluggers, old Liston did not have enough in the tank to beat a prime quarry.

 

Alfredo evangelista also was ranked when he fought Holmes and still he was a tomato can... What a ridiculous argument lmao

 

Chuvalo stopped Quarry. Frazier stopped Quarry. Ellis beat Quarry. Machen beat Quarry. Alongi drew with Quarry twice. Patterson drew with Quarry. Quarry was no world beater. Quarry never won anything.

Liston would do fine.

Ratings can be a joke. Like Quarry being rated #1 in 1970 when Ali returned, after Quarry had been stopped by Frazier and Chuvalo the previous year. And Quarry only lasting three rounds with Ali. What a joke. Possibly the worst Ring #1 heavyweight contender rating in the entire decade of the 70s.

Had the Liston who fought Wepner in 1970 ... who broke Wepner's nose, and his cheekbone and tore his face open to the point it required 72 stitches to close ... faced the #1 rated Quarry in 1970, Liston would've been the #1 contender when Ali returned, instead.

The jab kills Quarry.

 

No of them was even silimar to old Liston (or young) stylistically. Shavers and lyle were sluggers and quarry did beat both them.
