Sorry, yeah, it was Thad Spencer that Billy Walker beat. I can't go with your anti Quarry crusade though mate. Jerry was a thrilling Fighter to watch. The guys who beat him were top level as were many of the guys he beat. He'd sell more tickets than Liston and Martin combined.
Like Sonny Liston was dull? Chuvalo wasn't any more top level than Martin. And Leotis Martin knocked out Sonny Liston. And he knocked out Thad Spencer. And he knocked out Karl Mildenberger. Who was the best guy Quarry beat again? Was Patterson better than Liston?
Martin had won four straight after losing to Oscar in Argentina. Not sure he ever fought Billy Walker? I didn't see him on his record. Would he have beaten Frazier? Probably not but he was far from a journeyman which a few folks suggested. He was a pretty skilled guy that was a murderous puncher for his size. A serious threat to anyone in the top ten.
I'd rather watch Quarry. He was Top 10 for the best part of a decade largely because he won a lot of fights as an under dog, (Shavers, Foster, Lyle). He could have it or he could counter. He had astonishing courage and he was a terrific finisher. At his peak, Quarry was only really in one poor fight, against Jimmy Ellis.
Already realised and corrected my error Steak. Billy beat Thad Spencer. I certainly wouldn't call Martin a journeyman.
Jerrry got stopped by Chuvalo the year after he lost to Ellis (which happened the year after Jerry drew with Patterson, which came a year after Jerry lost to Machen). The Chuvalo stoppage loss came the same year Jerry got stopped by Frazier (the first time). The year before he got stopped by Ali (the first time). Boy, people really like to cut Quarry some slack. Jerry Quarry had a loss or a tie nearly every year from 1965 to 1975. But Liston loses ONE fight ... and he's a bum, the ranked contender who beat him is a bum, and everyone beats Sonny. It's nonsense.
Who called anyone a bum ? Certainly not me. All the fights you've mentioned, other than Jimmy Ellis, were terrific while they lasted. Hence Quarry gets love. Simples.
Well, he did beat a near-prime Earnie Shavers. Wiped him out. But Liston was of course a much greater fighter.
That's the truth. Bowe and Lewis obliterate him. The roided cheat Holyfield outmuscles and out-punches him. And although Tyson was not the same as in the 80's, he's still vastly superior.
Saying Bowe or Lewis beat him isn’t a stretch. Think he takes out Holyfield and 90s Tyson Bowe is a 50/50
Its Bull**** that Liston only fought against cans after Ali 2 Henry Clark in 1968 said after his TKO loss in Round 7 against Liston "Joe Frazier or Jimmy Ellis wouldn't last more than 3 or 4 rounds with Liston." Clark was a young 6′ 3″ 220 ibs , hungry , high ranked contender who fought against Leotis Martin , Ken Norton and Earnie Shavers. Leotis Martin was losing any Round until his lucky Punch vs liston.
