At this point I could probably be competitive against Mike Tyson for the first 3 minutes in a boxing match before he blows my head off.
Tyson's last two opponents just took him past 3-4 rounds as they knew he would badly fade after that. The strategy will be no different this time around
I will buy this fight and any comeback fight of his at any age. Tyson is still 10X more exciting to watch than any of Floyd's Circus Shamming
People that keep bringing up the McBride and Williams fight. That version of Tyson hated boxing and hated training and didn't want to fight. Obviously Tyson found a new fire. It's probably too late, but if he had that same fire 15+ years ago, not only would he have destroyed Williams and McBride, but Lewis would have fell also. It's too bad Mike's enthusiasm for boxing has reignited in a body that is too old now. That kind of fire would have kept all those twilight year losses out of his record. Would be the greatest karma though, if somehow Mike Tyson became the youngest AND oldest heavyweight champion in history.
Terrific post, this has pretty much been my thinking ever since this 'comeback' thing began. I don't think Tyson was EVER in a good head space in his whole career. Ok, when he started out he was this young, fit, fighting phenom, an animal in the ring but he was filled with hate. That plus all of the other drama that went on in his life eventually caused the fall. He seem's to have found peace since he retired. If only he had found it so much earlier.
I could understand his come back if he was being offered purses of $20-30 plus million but to risk it for $500,000-$1,000,000 for someone of his age and stature is embarrassing and not worth the risk reward tradeoff
I started following Tyson a few fights before the Ribalta fight. I was glued to my Tv every Saturday night. No sporting event I’ve watched matches a Tyson first round in the 80’s. When I was in high school, I’d say Tyson was better known than Michael Jordan. I watch these training clips and it’s hard not to smile. However, I don’t want to see the guy really fight again. I don’t want to see him get beat. I get he may be more mentally healthy today. I don’t think his heart was into a single fight he had after getting out of prison. I just can’t see him being competitive today. Maybe he’s got a good round in him but what about after that? He didn’t show much power in his last 2 fights years ago. What’s he going to do against today’s giants? It’s not that they’re better fighters but they’re 10 feet tall! I just don’t want to see that. I really don’t want to see him fight Holyfield again either. I’d pay to watch him train though! I remember seeing Sugar Ray just killing a heavy bag & looking blazing fast before his fight against Terry Norris. I’m happy to be wrong though.
