Leonard's "open revelation" doesn't make any sense, considering that Duran likely would have ended up in worse shape if they had waited longer for the rematch.

I think he likes it because it makes him seem shrewder and more clever than he really was though.

Leonard clearly takes pride in being shrewd, sees it as a part of the game.

I don't think this is a likelihood. Bear in mind that Duran had originally had his sights on a rematch in '81, anyway.

He probably does like it, but he had little choice but to embrace the whole 'I put the Hoodoo on Duran' narrative, once he and Dundee had publicly framed the pre-fight build up, as a campaign of "countless things to try to upset Duran". The start of that campaign can probably be traced back to Leonard acting on the intelligence he received about Duran's post-Montreal binging.

However, the appearance of being a master of 'out-of-ring boxing strategy' (whilst it might appeal to Leonard and some of his fans), can't help but lend itself to an assertion that Leonard never beat the best of Duran.

Did they have rematch clauses in their fights? Genuinely asking here...

It is apparently a scientific fact that statements are seen as believable just because they are repeated many times and this is certainly one of those. You would think that sources at the time saying that Duran started training in good time and made weight in good time would outweigh what Duran and Leonard (who didn't have any insight into Duran's camp) said many years later, but...

That's why I get so riled up by the whole "Patterson avoiding Cleveland Williams and Liston for years" narrative. A quick check will show that it doesn't hold up, but still it's repeated as an absolute truth.

Otherwise I think there's a good level at time forum, but those two really stand out as just muddled thinking.

The Marciano training myths are another one.

It seems like some people just get emotionally invested in certain narratives about their favorite fighters to the point where they become utterly incapable of reconsidering the flawed conventional wisdom in light of newly available evidence. A shame.

Gotta love you 2 revisionists. Even though what you say is a myth is all over the news, papers, mags of the time, etc., YOU throw all that aside and make yr own truth to fit your limited knowledge. Undercut all yr own opinions with what you want to be. You just don't have the brains to conceive reality.

Said it before just look at Duran's body he is clearly not in the same condition as he was in Montreal.
He did party for months, he did stuff himself.
Are you saying he didn't? It's you who are re-writing history...
