Freakish strength myths are perhaps exaggerated, though he is still the strongest man next to Yarde at 175 by far, and Beterbiev is much more natural of a 175er

This makes the rumors of a 350lbs bench from Terry Norris hard to believe imo

If he trained for it exclusively, he’d probably break the Record Bench press for that weightclass. He probably had an off day.

Beterbiev’s lifting technique needs work. He needs to relax his shoulders and remember to inhale and exhale and he most likely would’ve got the lift. 295-300 is very doable for Beterbiev, who most likely walks around at about 185 lbs.

Also, no way in heck can Terry Norris bench 350 lbs at his weight. I could believe 250 lbs, which is still amazing for his size, but 350 lbs is total BS.

It doesn't look like he lifts very often from watching this.

There is no doubt in my mind, none whatsoever, that Beterbiev can do 295. Are you sure that he wasn't just wore out from training? Context is everything.

I am 5'7" and some change, and in my day, my natural bench was about 150, which I got up to about 250 with no supplementing, but religiously going to the gym and going though my reps. I do not consider my chest to be strong (though my biceps are, and my legs are freakishly strong) and back when I used to wrestle I would often come across guys who were stronger.

Boxers don't necessarily train for lifting strength in that respect, but 295 would not be THAT much for a powerful 175 pound athlete, and I am positive that he could do it on another day.

Or, alternatively, it could just be that, like me, he carries his strength in other muscles, and the chest would be something that he would have to build, but doesn't because there is no real utility in it.

Looks like a failed max at 295lbs to me, but has no bearing on his punching power. Also has no bearing on Terry Norris.

    Probably just not a lifter.

I can pick up 350lbs and walk or hold it for a good while, for example, but I don't even know what a bench press is.

Beterbiev is not a lifter. Look at his workouts; they are aimed at maximising explosiveness and generating short range power. He is all sinew and tendon strength rather than huge muscles.

Watch him wrestle or arm wrestle someone as big as Arslanbek Makmudov and you'll see why, pound for pound, he is a monster. He isnt even that big either, probably 5ft10 without shoes.

Well who knows how long he had been working out before this, after a hard workout in the gym even light weights can feel heavy

I know that Artur has pressed 330+lbs, this video probably from a regular training, boxers are very far from regular gym guys, they don't make any kind of exercises for biceps for instance

But he "didn't know what he was taking" at that time, so that probably invalidates that.

Mike Tyson, so I heard put up 300 pounds on the bench. Benching 300 pounds for a guy 185 is pretty rare.

Watching the clip, AB could have done 285 for sure. 300 was almost.

150 lbs benching 250 is excellent. On the bench it helps if you have shorter arms and broad shoulders.
