Over a period of some two months, we have taken nominations on the thread above. If your favorite (completed) Round 14 of all time isn’t here, I wish you had taken time to nominate it. This has hardly been a secret. Ground rules: The point of this exercise is to construct a mythical best 15-round fight of all time, and this fight is going the distance, so each nominated round has to go the full three minutes — so something like the 12th round of Chavez-Taylor I is not eligible. All weight divisions are eligible. And in rounds where the participants faced each other more than once, please specific which fight. Gloved era only. And importantly, this should be about the best rounds not the most historically significant. Voting will be set to stay open for three days. So you’re saying that like today’s fighters, today’s boxing fans don’t have the stamina for 15-rounders haha.
Once again, I pick the the favorite: Ali-Frazier III, although it was a tough set. I did think Muhammad-Conteh I didn't belong tho.
Not a fan of this selection, it's all very minimal IMO. I think Saldivar-Winstone II was better (yes I mentioned it in the other thread) and TBH I think the best of these rounds is probably Chacón-Limón IV. Holmes-Norton, Saad-Conteh I and Thrilla in Manilla are all pretty meh. They're either too one-sided or just okay rounds. McGuigan-Cruz comes second IMO. Boza-Edwards vs Limon was also a good mention. Thinking about it, some all-time classic 15 rounders probably have better 14th rounds that don't stand out in their own fights. Although, TBH, I just don't watch as many full 15 rounders as I'd like.
I'm thinking Holy-Qawi, Yuh-DeMarco, the Tokashiki-Madera series. Like I said, I regrettably don't watch too many full 15 rounders.
My number 1 fight is Chacón-Limón IV, so I agree. I have seen a bunch of 15 rounders, I just don't make a habit of watching them.
There's just something about the tie-breaker round makes is so much more suspenseful than the 12-rounders of today.
I sooooo look forward to these when Pat puts them up. Just digested all of them. Ali-Frazier and Saad-Conteh were both a bit one-sided. McGuigan-Cruz and Holmes-Norton were terrific rounds with clean shots. Edwards-Limon was a subdued brawl, but I went for the all out Pier sixer and that was Chacon-Limon. Nothing left on the table and they still had to do the 15th. Terrific round and my choice for the best 14th.
Once again, a lot of really good stuff here. Enjoying every minute ... or should I say three minutes. This was the round where we had the hardest time finding nominees and a few, IMO, fall pretty far short. Sometimes a person remembers a round because it was a shift in momentum that was key in a big fight (like Saad Muhammad-Conteh here) but as a stand-alone it just don’t stand up. But Bobby Chacon-Bazooka Limon .. man. Those guys fought four times and if they found 100 I guarantee every single one would have been a barn burner. Just look at how the crowd reacts as the momentum swings back and fourth. (And I do love me some body work.) That’s my winner. Let’s see which round takes the voting tally!
