The best HW version of Moore vs the best version of Jersey Joe. Who takes it?

Super classic. Walcott wins decision in an amazing fight. One of my favorite fantasy matchups.

It's surprising that these two never met. I guess in Joe's early days Archie was only a Middleweight and of course he never stepped up to Heavy until after Walcott's retirement.
It's certainly a mouth watering prospect isn't it ? Two of the cutest, craftiest guys that ever laced on gloves.
Walcott was a lovely mover. He must have been an influence on Muhammad Ali with the way he showed out, moving from side to side and rolling his hands. Jersey Joe was also an expert timer of a counter punch. Just look at his knockdowns against Joe Louis. Louis wasn't hurt, he was just perfectly set up.
Archie's great skill was how he got close to an opponent, slip slide, catch the shots, he was a genius a walking a man down and closing the range. His power speaks for itself. The highest number of recorded knockouts in the history of Boxing.
I can imagine Walcott looking just fabulous in this for round after round, gliding around Moore bouncing shots off him and certainly throwing his flashy bolo.
Problem is that those shots are likely to be landing on the top of Archie's head or on his cross armed guard. Even the punches that get through Archie will ride and roll with.
Moore had unbelievable patience and coolness under fire. I can just see him getting closer and closer to Walcott as the rounds go by but still not throwing much, a jab here, a slap or a tap there and then in maybe the 7th or 8th, Archie changes up, rolling and punching with Jersey Joe and ripping in hooks and uppercuts with full power.
Walcott, ambushed like so many others, knocked down several times and stopped in the 9th, like so many of Archie's victims, utterly baffled. The story of Moore's career.

I read somewhere that after Moore won the LHW championship from Maxim, he set his sites on Walcott. They had discussed a potential matchup but it fell through. But I lean more towards a Walcott late round stoppage. But it would be an entertaining fight.

This is not true, Moore has better jab and was better defensively. Walcott was very good fighter but Moore was on another level in terms of skills. Jersey Joe is bigger so it negates some of that, but not enough to say that he's better at everything.

You think Moore could take Walcott's power?

Well, Moore was extremely good defensively so maybe he wouldn't need to do that often? If he gets countered by a perfect shot (like Charles KO) then I'm sure he couldn't, but Walcott did that only once to Ezzard in 4 tries. Moore is different than Charles, but he wasn't easy to land on cleanly and he wasn't easy to KO.

Then there is a counter argument - could Walcott take Moore's power? Again - probably not, but he wasn't easy to find either (although Moore was better at setting up his punches than Walcott).

One thing is sure - it would be terrific fight, one of the best possible fights that never happened.

    I disagree

    Chin Walcott
    Footwork Walcott
    Left hook Walcott
    Right cross Walcott
    Jab Equal
    Handspeed Equal
I'm not a fan of that crablike cross arm defence, it can let you down badly against fast punchers.

Did you miss this bit in my post?

Based on what? I know that Moore doesn't have the greatest chin, but Walcott'a chin is weak. Moore certainly could take a punch.
I disagree, Walcott's footwork is the most overrated thing in HW history. It's very good of course, but Moore was more effective with his feet than Walcott who did a lot of unnecessary footwork.
    I agree.
I disagree, Moore's straight right is among the best ever.
Again I disagree. Walcott did use his hav nearly enough while Moore had ATG jab.
    I agree.

So you are a fan of Walcott's inconsistent defensive style that made him open to counters quite often? Walcott lost to the best punchers he faced too.

I don't and I disagree with it. Walcott's main advantage would be his size and craftyness, but he's not better boxer from technical standpoint. Otherwise he wouldn't lose so much.

I'm not a particular fan of either. Moore was ko'd by Middles he was on the floor multiple times. Both are somewhat overated imo.
In which fights can I see Moore taking out heavyweights with a straight right?
There's a hell of a lot of dross on Moore's record.

Moore is top 15 fighter ever at worst.

It's not that hard to find:

I think Moore had an excellent chin. Being stopped by Ali, Patterson and Marciano isn't a problem, especially when your 35+ for all of them. Being stopped by Bivins and Charles isn't either, two of the greatest LHWs ever. The only other KO is to Morrow, and I can't seem to out that down to anything other than a fluke.

If Moore didn't have a great chin, he'd have been KOed a lot more than he was.
