I don't completely agree on this one Rich. Monzon faced the second best middleweight in his finale and Hagler tho declining still faced a natural welter who hadn't fought forever. Hagler made strategic errors and missed the boat a bit. They were at almost identical career stages. This ekes Monzon ahead for me. He would not have made the same errors imo.
I agree, but I read about an interview in Ring Magazine from i believe July 1987, Carlos said that after the second Valdes fight, that he looked at himself in the mirror, and said something like, No one knocks Carlos Down, But Rocky Valdes Did, So I Quit. With all due respect, his heart was not in it anymore, he became a movie actor in his native Argentina.
As for this nonsense BS,always repeated by the Monzon hater,that Monzon feasted on small middles. Monzon 159 Valdes 158 2nd fight Monzon159 Valdes 160 1st fight Monzon159 Tonna 159 Monzon 159 Licata 160 Monzon160 Bouttier159 2nd fight Monzon159 Griffith157 2nd fight Monzon158 Briscoe157 2nd fight Monzon159 Bogs 160 Monzon159 Bouttier 159 1st fight Monzon159 Griffith155 Ist fight Monzon 159 Benvenuti 160 2nd fight Monzon160 Benvenuti 160 1st fight Monzon160 Denny Moyer 160 Monzon 160 Napoles 153 Anyone want to compare those stats with Hagler's defences?
For their first fight in May 1967 Rings end of year rankings. Emile Griffith, Champion Luis Manuel Rodriguez Nino Benvenuti Sandro Mazzinghi Don Fullmer Freddie Little Ferd Hernandez Ki Soo Kim Luis Folledo Tom Bogs Juan Carlos Duran
I agree with you, Carlos had a easier time winning his title, stopping Nino Benvenuti, KO 12, while Hagler fought a draw against Vito Antuofermo on Nov 30 1979. He did not win his title until he fought Minter on Sept 27 1980.
The bit about Briscoe being unranked when Hagler fought him Mac. I think he was ranked but could be wrong. He was #5 in the end of year rankings.
McVey is wrong more often than a broken clock. Briscoe a former welder who stands 5'8" all and weighed in at 156 pounds drew with Monzon. Briscoe could punch a was given a draw in Moznon's backyard.
Mcvey, Monzon feasted on small middles? Yeah - Briscoe was Ring Rated in 1978. He entered the year #4 but dropped a couple of places after losing to Antuofermo. Not sure if he moved up again, despite beating Chiaverini, but it would have at least maintained his position, inside the 10.
Sorry JT my mix up should have said against Monzon 1st fight. NB Hagler 's challengers Leonard ex welter Hearns ex welter Antuofermo ex light middle Mugabi Light middle Duran ex light weight
