I agree, but also Joe's hands didn't allow him to carry the power to move up so early.

While Froch was a hugely entertaining fighter to watch, among most in the era as it usually felt like a 50/50 fight before they got into the ring, I do agree with other posters that he had elements of luck in the Pascal, Taylor, Dirrell, and Groves fights. Even the Kessler fights. Different referees, judges or levels of flatness and dust clouds or antimatter and he could have had a very different record. Highly entertaining career and path. Calzaghe, however, would have beaten him as or more clearly than Ward did.

His style made for fun fights, due to his positives and flaws. Even if he is a flat earther and questionable in other personality traits!

 

I respect your opinion, but I don’t think that Joe would have moved up earlier even if he’d had been injury free and 100% healthy.

Maybe not. In an easy world with Frank back then, even with his injury issues it was easy to keep the dosh coming in...but in an ideal world where the best fights are always made I like to think he would have...I'm half Welsh too, so may be somewhat biased!

Surely the reason Froch fights often felt fifty fifty was because of who he was fighting?

Froch wouldn't have been a fifty fifty fighter if he was in with Manfredo, Pudwill, Mkrtchyan (insert massive long list of terrible Calzaghe opponents for the best part of a decade.)

 

Mack was a gimme but the rest had clearly done 'something.' The reality is that prime Froch going in with Brewer and Mitchell would have probably been a favourite, and going in against the vast majority of Joe's CV would have battered the lot.

Froch basically had one fight after he became world champion where you knew he wouldn't be troubled, and that was Mack. Calzaghe had well into double figures pointless fights. Very frustrating for fans. Even the biggest Calzaghe supporters had no interest in fights like Ashira and Manfredo.

 

Think it was more the kit he used to use in his dads knackered gym. He mentions something about it in his autobiography.
