Still trying to understand different styles and attributes of boxers, such as height and reach. Does Fury possess a boxing style that could trouble a 60s or 70s Ali in a way Ken Norton did (i.e. he'd fare a good chance of winning with fair judges)? I know Norton's technically a swarmer and Fury is an outboxer, but he's got a solid jab, and seems like he could counterpunch Ali whenever he tries to land a punch, similar to what Norton would do. Except he has a much longer reach and height, which would mean more effort for Ali in landing and avoiding hits. What do you guys think?
How would Ali negate Fury's advantages? I'm guessing using his speed and movement, although Fury is no snail.
Fury overcommits with his jab bringing his head nearer to his opponents lead hand, Ali had an amazing counter right which counter Fury`s jab often.
What is prime Ali? Because Ali changed alot between pre-vietnam to post vietnam, had good wins pre-vietnam but even better post-vietnam This content is protected I'd expect Fury would outwork Ali late fight to a decision. Too big & too sexy. Ali would be mentally and physically the toughest man Fury has ever fought though. Ali just isn't physically imposing enough & many of his tactics Fury nullifies. Fury would bully him badly in a clinch. The young quick footed Ali pre-Vietnam would run rings around a younger Fury who would look to impose himself on him. but prime Fury? I don't see either version of Ali handling him. As much as we all love Ali the brutal truth is Tyson Fury from 2015 onwards at 6'8" 270 pounds moves much better than a 6'3" 220 pound post Vietnam Ali. The first of his kind as a super-heavyweight which people are quickly coming to respect. I highly doubt i'll get to another man of his size move like him in my lifetime. Steve Cunningham who is the same size of Ali - "It's like fighting with a fridge on top of you"
I wouldn't say Fury moves better than a 70s Ali, unless you're talking about Ali in the late 70s. He could still very much dance in this period.
Because he doesn't have the reach advantage, I'd say Ali would have to use the jab to the body more and feint before throwing up top, constantly mixing it up. Fury might have success jabbing with Ali but his jab still wasn't what Ali's was. Fury has size on his side, but Ali does Fury's style better than he does himself, so I see him winning the chess match by being a bit smarter, a bit faster, a bit harder to hit. Fury could definitely win a good amount of rounds coming forward as well though. But I favor Ali.
If Cunningham could out box fury for 7 rounds and be in front on the score cards and negate fury’s reach and height advantage then Ali could do that for the extra 5 rounds for a UD,easily, Ali is much faster of hand and foot Even in the seventies and infanatly between 64-67 than Cunningham, has a better chin than Cunningham, has a better IQ than Cunningham, and is far more durable. We all know fury is only 6ft 7 and a bit here he is next to 6ft 8 price https://images.app.goo.gl/M43wy9t3fdB72kuo8 which is only a inch and half taller than terell so the height is not a problem, listons reach was only an inch shorter than fury’s so reach ain’t a problem either, and like I said above it didn’t bother Cunningham for 7 rounds, if fury comes in at 270 and try’s to kronk Ali it will make it worse, that might work with a limited boxer like wilder rushing him, but Ali won’t be there to corner, also fury can overreach frequently and will be getting hit with overhand rights by Ali who is one of the best with that shot, if he tries fighting like he did against Klitschko then Ali will easily out volume him with punches, fury hardly threw any punchers a round and Klitschko wasn’t even throwing anything back so that doesn’t bode well for fury, fury has most problems with smaller fighters that can move and box and Ali is the fastest and best of them. There is a reason he never mentions Usyk, he matches better against large slower fighters.
Why are you using Fury 4 years into his pro career? at 23 years old? Not current prime Fury? Cunningham had never been stopped in his career, a pretty tough career. Fury made him quit. This hypothetical is prime Ali & prime Fury
I didn’t just use the Cunningham fight, I used the Klitschko fight and the wilder fight as examples of how I think fury could have problems in this match up, I’m also glad you brought the timeline up because the gulf in class of opposition also as a negative bearing on the match up for fury, fury was fighting Cunningham On his 21st fight and having trouble with the smaller faster man, whereby Ali at age 22 and only his 20th fight was destroying Liston for the championship, so given the info of those 3 fury fights and the class of opposition Ali has fought I personally think fury as a long way to go Before I can put fury beating him, just my opinion of course. ps he didn’t look too great against Wallin which I presume is his prime as it was only one fight before wilder 2.
