I think Cooney, at his best, is a bit underrated. That said, Tyson was quick, strong, and determined right from the start. He'd pressure Cooney like no one ever did. Maybe Cooney gets him, but I doubt it. Young Tyson by KO within the first four rounds.
Cant see Gerry landing to the body. Tyson too short and fast - plus that crouch - while Gerry was a stand up boxer. He could land to the body of other tall, stand up fighters like Holmes or Lyle but Tyson's style would have negated the left hand to the liver. Gerry's style negates his right hand to the liver insofar as he didn't have one. Right hand, that is, not liver although I might be onto something there.
I have to go with the Bithday Guy, Iron Mike Tyson, Cus D Amato would devise a strategy to get under the reach of one Gerald Cooney, and ravage the body of Cooney who would not be fighting seniors from the local rest home but a vibrant young contender, Mike by TKO 10.
Undoubtedly, but Tyson was likely the harder hitter, even at that stage. If that had been his overhand right that hit Gerry...
Cooney would just about make it to the end bell. He'd be dropped several times and lose by a mile on the cards.
I was thinking the same thing! Tyson was not ready for Cooney at this stage. His first ten fights were against men with losing records, the majority of whom lad less than 6 fights at this stage.
Always a tough one putting a raw novice in against a more experienced pro. Tyson s power could do it but its hard to say.
