Monzon was so good, heck, he could of stopped the cut-prone Antuofermo in the first round. Although I think a stoppage between rounds 3 and 9 is the most plausible. I mean, without cuts as a factor, Antuofermo could really slug with even Monzon for a while, but i don't see it getting that far with how easy Vito cuts.

Vito beat a scared Hugo Corro, who beat a Monzon beat up Rodrigo Valdes twice. Rodrigo was way past his prime then.

Vito wasn't stopped on cuts in 1977, 1978, 1979 or early 1980 ... when he faced the likes of Marvin Hagler, Hugo Corro, Alan Minter, Bennie Briscoe and Cyclone Hart ... and fought well against all of them until the Minter rematch.

And I don't recall Monzon stopping anyone in a title defense on cuts. So I don't know why everyone's first thought is Monzon will "chop him up."

Antuofermo in 1979 (against Corro and Hagler) was fighting his best and was, at that time, as good or better than anyone Monzon defended against.

Meanwhile, Monzon, in 1972, fought Moyer and Briscoe (both of whom Antuofermo also defeated) as well as Tom Bogs (TKO 5) and Jean Claude Bouttier (who went 12). And Briscoe had Monzon in serious trouble.

The fight goes the full 15 rounds. Unlike most Monzon opponents, who followed him in circles around the ring, Vito pressures Carlos throughout, forcing him backwards.

The fight probably ends up similar to the first Minter fight, where who you believe won depends on where the fight is held.

Monzon only made one defense in the United States. He preferred to fight in Europe or at home.

    * If Vito fights Monzon in New York or Rome, Vito and his pressure score an upset.

    * If it's in Monaco, the decision is a tossup. Carlos won close decisions there, and Vito won his title from Corro there.

    * If it's in Paris or Buenos Aires, it's a Monzon win.

Classic matchup of styles. Who wins depends on which style you prefer over 15. Would've loved to have seen it.

Monzon never stopped anyone in one round. And if two guys Vito beat (Griffith and Briscoe) could go the distance with Monzon, I'm sure Vito in one of his best years as a pro could manage.

Alan Minter comprehensively outboxed Antuofermo, Monzon would dominate him on the outside and at close quarters.

But if Vito puts lifts in his shoes ??????

Just keep ignoring Vito beat a 35years old Briscoe and a 36 years old Griffith.

Then produce a single shred of evidence that Monzon got a hometown decision against Briscoe.
ps Monzon beat a 32 years old Moyer who had not lost in his previous `15 fights and a Moyer who was Ring rated number 3 having been in the top ten for the previous 3 years. Antuofermo beat a 3 years older version who fell out of the rankings after Monzon beat him and never regained a place in them again .

The 35 years old Moyer ,Vito beat had lost 8 of his last 15 fights ,would have another 4 and lose 3 of them.lol
You seriously need to find some objectivity from somewwhere!
Both Monzon and Hagler are top 4 all time middles, imo.
Minter and Antuofermo don't make the cut for the top 25.
    Antuofermo was stopped 5 times

I watched the fight live and still have U.S. boxing magazines from that time period. The decision was widely considered controversial. Maybe it wasn't in the UK. It was here. Howard Cosell, who called the fight for ABC and who usually insulted Antuofermo, actually had him winning by an easy decision.

The New York Times also had Vito winning. That's why there was an immediate rematch.

I tried to copy the NY Times article. Here's a link. They had Vito winning 144-141.

Depends on what style you prefer, like I said previously. If he fought like he did against Corro and Hagler in 1979, Vito could grab a decision in NY or Rome (he was born in Italy) or Monaco, where his style was appreciated.

Vito beat Griffith a year after Monzon did. They both beat Griffith a decade past his best. (Just keep ignoring that.)

    And everyone beat Briscoe.

They had common opponents - Griffith, Briscoe, Moyer - and Vito beat them all, too. And Vito drew with Hagler. Monzon never fought anyone as good as Hagler.

Like I said yesterday, you guys are completely dismissive of Antuofermo and Minter. And they were as good or better than anyone Monzon beat.

Anything could happen. Exactly. Like Vito could fight the way he did against Corro and Hagler in 1979 and grab a decision.

Vito and Minter were legit Middleweight champions. On this board, people seem dismissive of them and treat Hagler's wins over them as a walk in the park.
