so was Ali. But Ali shouldn't have got it that year, and Monzon shouldn't have either. Bob Foster was easily the most dominant fighter of the year P4P.
Did'nt Bob have three title defenses, stopping Vicente Rondon in 2 rounds on May 1 1972, then Mike Quarry on June 27 1972, KO 4, then Chris Finnegan, Sept 26 1972, TKO 14. Then poor Bob got trounced by Muhammad Ali, losing by TKO 8, on Nov 21 1972.
I think that was one of Ali's worst years actually. The Mac Foster fight was awful. The Lewis fight was good, but Lewis was nobody. Ali started very well vs. Chuvalo in rematch, but gassed out. The rematches with Quarry and Patterson were okay, as well as the Bob Foster fight. The only reason I can conceive that Ali was voted in was that he had a very active schedule that year. I certainly think Ali deserved the Fighter of the Year awards that he earned in '74 and '75, and I would have given him the award over Emile Griffith in 1964, but would not have given him the award in '63, '66, or '72. 1978 belonged to Larry Holmes or Leon Spinks.
Right. Those three wins were all amazing performances. Each of them. Ali fought six times, and none of them was especially impressive. Monzon was active that year too, but it was not one of his better years. Foster peaked that year, and he REALLY PEAKED.
Bob sure peaked against Ali, he got decked six times. Carlos defeated Bennie Briscoe by unanimous decision on Nov 11 1972.
Ragging on Foster for getting KO'd by Ali is kind of like ragging on Monzon for getting KO'd by Foster. Oh wait, Monzon never moved up a full weight class to challenge a prime great like Bob did...
No because he was smart enough not to move up in weight and listen to ignorant people who never fought in their life.
Carlos was not an idiot like some of these morons who like to please the ignorant fans by moving up in weight, Real smart fighters know their limitations.
But Ali outweighed him by 40 pounds! Just the age-old hopeless situation that the best light heavies have always faced.
P4P is always a debate but Napoles going from a lightweight to dominant welterweight champion is more impressive for my money
Then why did he sign to fight Muhammad Ali, knowing he was a failure against heavyweights, that is an excuse. i think you have been drinking your buddy's kool Aid.
