He has had a number of very long periods of inactivity, and some of his good wins, like Kingpin Johnson, who was a contender at the time, don't look at all good in hindsight. I think Cunningham is his third best, and Chisora fringe contender (rather than a gatekeeper), who has had a title shot, and gotten a couple of quality wins, the best of which was Takam Had the fight gone through with Haye, Fury undoubtedly would have won, and all else being equal, that would have been a formidable record. As it it, he tends to seek out and beat the very best, and if that holds against Joshua, it puts him ahead of guys like Holmes and Klitschko, in my book, who left fights on the table. We shall see. He is only 31, and doesn't have to do a lot more to be remembered as great.
Johnson wasn’t a contender. He was coming into the fight off losing in Prizefighter for gods sake. And Cunningham as his third best win says it all. A career cruiserweight who had lost three of his last four and only beaten Jason Gavern in over two years. I’m not saying they were bad fights at the time. Fury was still fairly raw and relatively inexperienced. But there’s still a huge gap between his two best opponents and the rest of his CV. (Although in time I think Wilder could realistically end up being ranked around the same level if not lower than Povetkin and so on. He’s got a chance of being a heavyweight Lacy.)
that fringe contender beat your legitimate contender 14 months after fury did hamer beat his ass 12 months after fury did fury caught king pin on the begging of that slid next you will betelling me 14 months is two years like that well informed gimp tried making out just to roll furys shyte through glitter
Yes, he was. It was an official eliminator bout. He got two wins that night, including Sosnowski, another former contender. Again, another official eliminator bout. I am not really sure if you were watching at the time, Cunningham was a player in the division. Anyway, I like the guy and think it is a good win. If you disagree, fair play. I don't completely disagree with you, but I am saying there is enough there so that a few good wins and we are indeed talking about a first class great. See above. Johnson was an official eliminator. That is all I am saying. No disrespect to Chisora, who I think has had a good career.
Meh. Johnson being in an official eliminator coming off losing in Prizefighter and beating absolutely nobody simply tells me a lot more about the pathetic state of organisations within boxing than it does about Kevin Johnson. If Cunningham was a ‘player’ in the division then I simply don’t understand the term. He was a blown up ex cruiser who hadn’t had a meaningful win in years. The simple reality is an inescapable one. Fury clearly is willing to fight the very best in world title/money spinning fights. But the second tier of heavyweights in the last five to ten years or so have included Povetkin, Pulev, Parker, Ortiz, Ruiz and Whyte, and Fury has fought none of them. As an aside, everyone in that list beats Cunningham and Johnson.
Yea I definitely want to see him face more top contenders. Mind you there isn’t many about lbh. The wins against Wallin and Schwarz might look better down the line depending on what they do. I would like to see him against pretty much most of the top contenders AJ has faced.
There’s big money fights out there for Fury. Undisputed with AJ is a Wembley stadium fight (but will end up in Saudi). Usyk is also a stadium fight of that size but only if Usyk beats Joshua first. Fury v Whyte would sell out a decent size football stadium. After that, it’s arenas unless Dubois starts looking like the second coming of Mike Tyson and goes on an 18 month run of knocking out quality opponents starting with Joyce.
I still don't think that Fury has the pull in the UK yet, despite the Mental Health Awareness campaign there doesn't appear to be the same interest as there is in Anthony Joshua so he needs that fight and he needs to win it if he wants other big fights in this country besides Joshua, he can't have anymore embarrassing situations like giving away tickets in Vegas.
Why does Fury want to fight in this country, when he can fight in America? If you're fighting in the UK, it's because you're not a star in the US. Connor McGregor has never fought in the UK and is unlikely to ever do so. Matchroom and Joshua have managed to convince everybody that selling out Wembley Stadium is a great achievement. Wilder-Fury 2 at the MGM (17,000) generated more revenue than any of AJ's Wembley fights.
I don't know if he's a star over there yet though. Despite the publicity campaign over there he was giving away tickets for free for a Vegas fight and the guy he beat, Wilder, in his big fight isn't that popular in his own country so it wasn't like Fury was beating an 80s Mike Tyson and suddenly getting a nation's attention. He's made a very good effort of selling himself and it could yet pull off but if he stays fighting over there after Wilder who is he going to fight who will draw the crowd? Joshua will do it against him here at Wembley, Whyte might go over there but that's hardly a pull for the Americans. Usyk would be the obvious choice if he's still looking good, which I think he will, I don't think Fury would want that fight though, I really think Usyk is the real deal and a potential bananaskin for Fury.
Boom! But you have muppets on here slating AJ's resume. Tyson's 4th best win is John McDermott ffs!!!!
Nonsense. AJ doesn't need to fight in the states ever, why? Earns more outside of it, that's why. He could stay in the UK and make hundreds of millions. Idiot!
Exactly. Tyson is a buffoon. People pay those his antics. Remember the time people tuned into Furey because he laid people out every time? Me neither. You're talking about a man that has to dress up as BATMAN to drum up interest for fight for EVERY TITLE AT HW! It's as if people forget the attendances of his fights here... Shocking!
